So, I know a lot of colleges have these diversity essays. The prompt usually involves something like "How will you contribute to diversity in our community at University X?" Length varies between colleges; I know Caltech's is capped at 150 words, while Rice's is 500 words.

My question is, what's meant by "diversity," really? Is it only racial, ethnic, cultural, or religious diversity? Is it just diversity of interests? I'm a white Protestant and don't really identify with any particular "culture," so I'm struggling on how to write these essays. Anyone have any tips for these sorts of essays, or your experiences writing these?

They are purposely vague so you can interpret the prompt however you want to. Diversity encompasses all of those examples you listed. Find something unique about yourself and write about it! Diversity doesn’t have to relate to culture, so try approaching the prompt differently and you might just have a stroke of genius. Good luck!

just get out the shovel and start shoveling as best you can.
if you want some inspiration, just watch penn and tellers segment on diversity from the showtime special they do .

hville7 said it really well - what makes you diverse? What differs you from your peers? What are you going to bring to x school that they don’t already have?
