I need help finding a topic for my diversity short answer essay. We are supposed to discuss an experiance where we have gained respect for cultural, social, or intellectual diversity, but I have had no such experiances I can think of. I live and grew up in a white upper middle class suburb. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. What are admissions readers looking for?

thats just cultural you could totally go a different route. like religion or economic class or if you traveled out of the country or a summer camp or something like that.

come on someone has to have advice or something! I just need 250 words about diversity and I am completley done with all my apps!!!!!

those are good ideas i didn't think of, but I am currently taking a break from religion, I have never been out of the country, and everyone around here is rich and stuck up :) Would writing about being religously tolerant without being personally religous work? Or how about politics? Is talking about the election/ my views ect. legitamate? Except the college is oober liberal (U of M) and I'm pretty moderate!

yeah then use that. say like how you would stand out amongst the other students but still be able to get along or something. or if your 'hood is mostly liberal or mostly conservative say how you split from the mold and did your own thing. except dont use maverick! mccain and palin have killed that for everyone lol

haha yeah i think that maverick has been used enough this century

Im writing a similar essay and Im stuck too. I was thinking of going with my morals, personality and where I am from will add diversity. But a college admissions person told me they want a "story" not a list. I think thats hard to do with a prompt like that.

Here are some thoughts, which I shared on earlier thread, which may help prompt you in writing a diversity essay.

Diversity really involves the state or fact of being diverse; different; unlike. In society, we have diversity all around us. People are different in physical attribute as well as their tastes. Some like coffee, others tea. Some like theatrical performances; others like movies. Some like team sports (baseball or football); others like individual sports (like tennis). At school, we have the math and science wizards; others excel in psychology, sociology and government. Some are raised in large families; others are the lone child.

Surely, you can find a number of ways of tackling or celebrating diversity -- even as you choose to view yourself as living " in a place with no diversity". All you need is imagination.
