Of these LACs, which are the most diverse and/or have the friendliest students? I'm aware that all of the following have a general reputation for lacking diversity, but of the list, is there a school that sticks out as having students who are particuarly friendly or particularly snotty?

Colgate
Colby
Middlebury
Bucknell
Lehigh

Academically these are all match/reach schools which seem great in almost all aspects...except I do not want to drink and party and lalala every night with people who are all wearing the same bag and driving the same car. On the other end, I don't want to be in a leftist campus (like Wesleyan). Aren't there any LACs out there with a good split of treehuggers, preps, artsy people etc etc? One of the great things about Ivys is that by in large, they are diversified racially and socially.

I want to add that students of those schools listed are incredibly bright and I'm sure that no matter where, one will find a social life if one is sociable. I'm just presenting a question for the bigger picture.

First of all, most LAC's are a lot more diverse than you'd think. Since the student body is so small, they take special care in admitting a diverse group of people, rather than admitting people based on numerical stats.

I don't know much about Colby or Middlebury, so I won't comment on them. You can start by crossing Bucknell off of your list - lots of upper/middle-class white kids who care a LOT about looks/fashion and even more about the drinking they do almost every day. Lehigh is also a huge party/drinking school. Colgate is very preppy, very white and also big on parties.

The atmosphere you're looking for seems to be more that of Swarthmore, Haverford, Sarah Lawrence, and Carleton.

All of the schools on your list are in very remote locations-one factor in lack of diversity. If want a miidle/moderate social scene with no frats check out Holy Cross-20% minority, a very good Jesuit school. Also might want to look at Trinity.

I haven't heard good things about Bucknell students, they are apparently clique-y and materialistic. Of course, any school with 1000+ people in it is going to have "diversity" to some extent, and you won't find 1000 of the same type of people in one place--I firmly believe you'll find a great group of friends anywhere.

I can speak for Colby and Bucknell, that if you're looking for diversity, keep looking, the repuation of homogenity at these school is not understood until you ralize how isolated these schools are, especially Colby up in Maine. Under these bubbles, the lack of diversity is killer for most students of color, except for Colby's international population, a plus.

I'll second the comment on Middlebury, it is your gem out of the five school.

of that bunch, Colby and Middlebury have the friendliest reputations, but neither is very diverse by ethnicity or income-level.

Reacting only to your post, the school in your apparent target area that comes to mind is Bates. . .again, not that diverse, but very friendly and a bit more diverse by incom-level and social attitudes.

You might benefit by checking out some of the midwest LACs, like Carleton and Kenyon.
