"Diversity" or lack of at IU (and probably most big state u's)

Let me start off with this. I love IU, it is literally at least 10 times better then high school was. However, one thing that bothers me a lot is this "diversity" issue.

It seems like EVER university promotes "diversity" (of course they would, who wouldn't).

In Indiana's case:

They claim to have soandso percent of blacks, sosos percent of hispanics, asians, etc. (it is 4 am right now and I am too tired to look it up (good thing first class at 2:30)).

Yet, while here, I notice one thing. There is no diversity.

What exactly is "diversity"? Having a certain percentage of a race at a school?

I think not, thats not what diversity is all about. Diversity is IMO where you take a random sample of people and they are "mixed". That means you will find a white "hanging out" with a black, asian , hispanic, etc.

IU has different "centers" (latino, black, asian) to help promote "diversity". But I see it almost like race "seperation".

It is almost like race "Segregated" here at iu. I see blacks hanging out with blacks, latinos hanging out with latinos, Foreign Korean students hanging out with korean students. Its almost like race cliques.

Occasionally, you'll find a mixed group, but usually I dont see much "diversity" at all.

Who do these culutre "centers" cater to? To their respective groups. Its almost like a MEETING place for these certain races. At AAA meetings you will find guess what, all ASIANS. What is the point of the "Hispanic Student Association" or the "Korean Student Assocation"? It fustrates me to see the university support these "diversity" groups, when in actuality its HURTING the whole point of diversity.

These groups are nothing but gathering places for the people of the same race to "hang out".

I am quite disillusioned over this... is there even such thing as diversity? I certainly did not see it in High school, and College is almos the same thing.

I honestly have not seen a group filled with more then 2 races ONCE here at iu.

Is this how "diversity" is suppose to be? Fellow CCers tell me how "diverse" your college is.

BTW, i am a "twinkie" ;), but I hang out with ALL RACES, unlike most students here at IU.

IU needs to stop claiming to have diversity and have "diversity events" and do something about it. Perhaps COMBINE all the culture centers into one building? Having all these race bubbles/cliques is not the way to go.

Segregation exists because people want it to. If you think segregation only exists at big state universities then you clearly haven't lived....anywhere. People associate with their own race at much higher levels than other races because they feel comfortable. Why would you want to prevent people feeling comfortable?

I never said only.

Great they feel comfortable, then whats the point of diversity if we "all want to be segregated"?

Brings up the whole issue of "affirmative action", if as you said people want to be "segregated", theres no point in diversity then.

I agree. Diversity requirements are idiotic to begin with. False diversity by lowering academic standards weakens institutions.

At big schools people have to find a group of friends they will be close with because if they don't then they may have no friends. So therefore when people meet other people who they have things in common with they become friends. It just happens that people of the same race usually have more in common than people of other races. I go to a big school UW with a huge asian population and while I have a few asian friends more are white becuase those are the people that I have the most in common with. If you just looked at my school's demographics then you would say it is diverse, but actually people are far more likely to befriend someone of their own race.
