I know EC's are a big part of applying to TCNJ and can also help if you're lacking in another section (sat's,class rank, gpa, etc)

I was wondering if the "off-the-cuff" type of volunteering and EC's help more than others, or if it looks better to have ones pertaining to your major?

I'm a jr and will be applying next year for education ED, my ec's will be at time of applying:

-First Aid Response Squad[cpr, first aid, emt certified along with going in the actual ambulance and working on calls] for 1 year
-Buddy Baseball[T-ball with autistic children] for 3 years
-Peer Leadership for 4 years (Hopefully president Sr year)
-Conflict Manager for 2 years
-Mock Trial 1 year
-Epilepsy advocate[recognized on the foundations website] for 2.5 years
-Interning for Board of Ed. various hours

Do you guys think the diversity/"rarity" of such EC's would impact me greater than the average ec's? or because they don't necessarily pertain to my major they look the same as any EC's?

I'm hoping that this could help outshine my lack of AP classes, any help is appreciated thanks!

You’re EC’s look great to me; it seems you’ve devoted a lot of time on them, which is I feel is very important. Plus, I see peer leadership, conflict manager, and the baseball buddy activity pertaining to education since you’ve been working with kids so there shouldn’t be a problem with your EC’s having nothing to do with your major.

About great EC’s making up for GPA, SAT, and ranking, I think this usually only happens if your scores and ranking are only slightly below the range of what the college usually accepts. Great Grades/SAT/rigor > Great EC’s imo in most cases.

Since you’re only a junior, you should think about taking AP classes senior year to show colleges that you’re trying to challenge yourself.

What Glacius said… But I don’t think the diversity/“rarity” of such EC’s would impact you greater than the average ec’s. Leadership in a EC is likely more important than uniqueness.

I agree with ncmentor. I doubt just having “rare” ec’s will get you any farther but schools are always looking for well rounded students and good leaders.Keep up the dedication and hard work your senior year and you’ll be fine!

Thanks, my GPA should be around a 3.5 and my class rank will be in the top 15% once I take my ACTs it’ll be easier to chance but TCNJ is my first choice hands down. It’s just hard because sophmore year I was homeschooled due to hospitilizations and being sick. It shows up as part of my IEP but put my gpa at 2.75 and the top 50% because the home bound service didn’t put my grades into the system so it screwed everything up -.-
