I am in the beginning stages of a divorce and wonder if I would qualify for grants/financial aid as a single mom. I wanted to start this Fall, but I’m afraid it won’t be enough time to qualify for financial aid once the divorce is finalized. Also, I was told that if we file our taxes jointly, I may not qualify at all with his income. Anyone have any suggestions or advice. Links or articles?
When you say “this Fall,” do you mean Fall 2018? It’s a bit late for that.
Your ability to qualify for need-based grants and financial aid is determined primarily by your income and then your assets, among other things. Without knowing anything about your financial situation, it’s impossible to give any meaningful advice, except to say use google to find online information and give yourself a basic understanding of need-based aid, and then come back here with some more focused questions.
Your FAFSA application will have marital status as of the day you file. If you are separated or divorced, you will file as separated/divorced. You will include ONLY your income…for the tax year of that FAFSA. You will not include your former husband.
