Do Ad-Coms Ever Check Up on Marginal Admits?

Say John applied to a highly selective school with stats that put him in the bottom 25% of enrolled students. After debating about his application, the admissions officers decided to admit him but did so much more reluctantly than they did for Tim who had stats that put him well within the top 75%. Both Tim and John decided to enroll at the same institution. Would the admissions officers later check up on John's progress (college GPA, involvement in extracurriculars, course rigor, etc) and if so, would they do the same for Tim?

I realize the answer to this might vary from school to school, but does anyone know if schools that admit on a holistic basis later check up on the "controversial" admits? If so, how do they do this (generalized data with hs GPA/ scores versus college GPA or more specific data points), and does it help them decide who to admit or reject in the following years?

They do not check up when a student is in college in the sense of watching any particular person based on stats at time of admission. However, all the colleges I know keep detailed statistics for all levels of admittees so they can keep track of how students do as a group and as a whole. That includes being able to compare the success levels of students admitted with low stats compared to those with higher, whether more in one group tends to drop out than another, and other information.
