Do adcoms Google applicants?

Do Adcoms ever google applicants to find out stuff about them, or to compare students from the same school? Do they ever look at other lists of students, like winners of X competition or Y major tournament?

wat? do u mean?!

Hahah. No.

That's a great question. I'm sure that some might google applicants in certain situations if they want more information or are trying to validate something the applicant said. Or if they are bored...

I know of a friend who was "Googled" because they asked him about his brother who was at Harvard and had some great accomplishments.....it was funny. Friend is at Standford.

That would be a little...excessive.

Depending on the number of applicants, I'm not sure how they would find the time..

what about people with common names? wont that be a little.. hard to find? since google will turn up with 3242434 results

The internet has certainly made the world smaller so if something sounds to good to be true, I would not be suprised if an admin googled an applicant to look for (in)consistencies in the applicants statements.

I have read articles where employers have searched for personal sites of potential hires, and discarded the resume when they found the individual's site -- lesson to all, don't post anything out there that you wouldn't want your mother or grandmother to read!

They could Google applicants. Heck, anyone could Google you. Therefore, it's wise not to put anything on the Internet that would make you look bad if an adcom, your parent, your GC, etc. were to see it.

Believe it or not, my husband once had a college journalism student who had put up a porno web site under his own name. A prospective employer in the PR field found it. So much for that student's prospects at that company....

That's creepy. Wonder if adcom would search sites like MySpace, LiveJournal, etc. and find some disturbing information about Ms. 2400 5.0 perfect girl!

how did you even think of this question?

and, yeah:

what do you guys think? HYP admit?

Well, everything I've read has suggested that adcoms struggle enough just to read through all the applications, I doubt they could take the time out to google applicants.

Aw, I only have an 8.2. Can I be accepted?

How did they think of this question? Googling is a game, an activity for this generation and for office workers......who among us has not googled their own name? Is is kinda like facebook games.

of course, you can forget about it if your name is john smith.

Very funny. Kinda like you got the kids license plate for your trycycle and I didn't I can Google some fun stuff and you cannot. Gee I never thought payback would come in this form.

Do to this thread I just googled my name, and it is not common at all, and there was 5 pages of results, 3 of which involved me. 2 school related articles and one on schol bowl camp. Don't worry guys.

i googled my name and i came up with a lake with my name in Arizona border and a hotel with my name in China.
