drum major???
i think you need to elaborate a little bit?

I think so? It's a pretty big deal.

i don't know much about band so how rare is a drum major? In my experience so far, ivies like people who are really good at instruments nobody else really plays.

i was also wondering that too. would being section leader for 2 years be significant?

@nooob: generally there is 1 drum major and sometimes 1 or 2 assistant drum majors.

well i've been a section leader for two years and i got first chair/section leader again for the upcomming year again so it'll be for three years. if i try out for drum major and get it, would that be a big deal?

drum majors dont play the drums btw (some people asked.....) they're the "conductors" for a marching band. i'm a flute player by the way.. so no rare instrument.

Well I think what you have to understand is that drum majors are just like any other leadership position in an organization. Colleges will look at it and see that you're a drum major and an officer of a very large organization.

Generally, drum majors.... well people not in band probably won't know what a drum major is... they'll more likely know what a "Band President" or "Band Historian" is simply because other organizations use those names for their officer positions.

It's the same thing with the whole entire liuteniut/captain of dance/color guard teams.

It's still an officer position so it should be good, perhaps you can briefly tell them in your app what it is and make sure to include the 250 hours you devoted to it during marching season!!!

***From: A sophomore drum major :D

You're a sophomore drum major? o.o At my school the drum major's a senior unless there are 2 other assistant drum majors.

my school doesnt care what grade you're in, as long as you're competent enough to be one. so from what i'm getting from the replys, it should look pretty good on my resume right?

yes it will look good on your resume, but it won't stand out. Its just another leadership position.

In the end, I believe, it's not about how impressive what you do looks on an app, but that an app reflects what it is you did with your time. If you enjoyed what you did and are proud of it, it is you and you are what you do and thus that is what colleges want to know. Being a drum major is great; whatever you do, don't give it up because something you like less seems to appear to look "more impressive" on paper.

It better be a big deal

(coming from 2 year drumline capt./ 1 year asst. drum major)

haha rsxwheeeeee

& well my resume has music written all over it, i mean i may not have been accepted into playing in all-states band but i've been accepted for all south-jersey band and stuff.

The Ivys don't have much need for drum majors-have you seen their marching bands? They need writers to do the funny half time shows and they need musicians, though-and if you can write a cool essay and show your leadership or creativity-then a drum major could be a cool hook.

Whats "adcoms"? I've seen it mention on another thread as well.

admissions counselors

so just show that im really into what im doing with music?
