Do any students commute from Fresno/Madera to UC Merced?

My daughter doesn’t want to live on campus so does anyone commute or is it too far?

I think it’s too far. Why would she want to spend 1.5-2 hours a day commuting, when she could be having the classic college dorm experience, making new friends, etc?

Each direction from Fresno to UC Merced is about an hour by car, two hours by public transportation. Two to four hours each day of commuting seems rather unpleasant, and could substantially reduce time available for school work, social activities, part time work, and/or sleep.

Wont the commute be longer on “fog days” ( and with the pesticide sprays) where your license plate tells the CHP what hours you can commute? We got stuck in that traffic during a visit through that area. The hotel employees told us about it.

I think that commute is too long and it will get old really quickly. With the prices of gas and maintenance on the car, the costs will affect your budget. Plus, she will get very sleepy on that ride when she crams late at night. All of the group meetings and labs will be at various hours. Driving back and forth will be a pain if she forgets something.

Are the pesticide sprays close to campus?

No, but they are on the farms on the 5 and 99. You are not affected by them except that if the pesticides are sprayed at the time of the fog, it clouds up the area.
