do AOs google applicants?

I have heard that college AOs will sometimes conduct online searches on applicants. I am wondering if prep school AOs do the same. Or perhaps they google parents? Anyone have information on this? We don't have anything to hide, but I was thinking this could potentially add/detract from a candidate's image. It's likely that time does not allow this to be a common practice, but that it may be done if there is an award to confirm or if something doesn't seem to add up right.

For 8th graders, it would be a mostly unfruitful endeavor. Basically, local news fluff about being on the t-ball championship team, participating in the annual ballet showcase with a list of 721 other aspiring 5th-grade ballerinas, that sort of thing.

That’s why the AOs don’t bother doing on-line investigations to see what applicants laid bare. They’re way too busy with essay-reading, interviews, school visits and such. So they leave the Googling to the staff.

I agree with D’yer. However, not every applicant is 13. I think the best answer a parent can give is, yes, they definitely do.

Don’t put anything online you don’t want discovered. And definitely, if you have a Facebook page - update your privacy settings so your activity CAN NOT be seen by “friends of friends”.

Under Facebook settings, on the “connecting on Facebook” page, set the control for “Search for you on Facebook” to “Friends Only.” Then people who aren’t your friends can’t find you through a Facebook search.

Check your privacy settings frequently, as Facebook changes their policies at times.

Can I PM one of you about my situation?

future, you are welcome to pm me, though all I can offer is my point of view as a parent.

Alright, thanks :)
