Do ASU professors dislike Barrett students?

So I finally got to visit Barrett this week and was surprisingly blown away. Prior to the visit, I had the attitude of “well, this would be the worst case scenario”. But after having the opportunity to see the complex and learn more about the opportunities available, I think I would love Barrett.

Then, something at the end of my visit gave me second thoughts.

I was talking to an economics major and Barrett student and I asked her about the honors contracts in ASU classes. She responded by telling me how willing the business professors are to work with honors students relative to other departments. While, that sounded good since I am a prospective business student, It made me worry that professors generally aren’t welcoming to the honors students who approach them.

Any thoughts on this?

BTW Barrett is the only campus I have seen that looks better in real life than it does in the pictures online.

Yeah, the pictures on the website is a tad fugly. Anyways, I think what the student was getting at was that the Barrett business program is the most advanced of the various honors programs, complete with separate advising, etc. Professors as a whole are very willing to accommodate honors students, the ones in business are just more familiar with the procedure and stuff.

Professors in general like good students whether they are in the Honors College or not. Barrett students are the ones that professors like to teach and work with. You will not go wrong by coming to Barrett.

I have one child at ASU and one going to Barrett next year and know several other current Barrett students through my older child. I think it was unfortunate phrasing that even raised the question in your mind - all professors like smart students and the Barrett students are some of the best on the ASU campus. As the previous poster noted, the business school has a large number of students in Barrett and their relationship between honors and business is particularly strong, but that doesn’t mean that there is any negative association with any other department, just a hightened familiarity in business.

Since you are interested in business, I would also add that the Carey school offers a lot of opportunities to all business majors - particularly the honors kids. There is so much to do and get involved with your greatest limitation will be the number of waking hours in a day.

Hey, no, professors LOVE barrett kids! I was the same as you going there with eh expectations and loving it and now im enrolled for fall 2011  Its just that the business honors program is SO well done and so well-rounded there’s an insane amount of opportunities and experiences they offer. I definately think it was just poor phrasing that raised this question at all. The business honors part (the WP Carey Academy) is the most well developed of all the honors program and if you look into the details its better than anything else ive seen at other schools :D

I’m a Barrett freshman and let me assure you, the professors love students from Barrett. Out of all the schools, the business school has been possibly the most highly involved with and supportive of the honors college, but that doesn’t mean the other schools are not supportive as well. The business program just has the barrett business community and the school has, I believe, several special deals with the honors college. However, I’m not a business major and every professor i’ve had has been delighted to have Barrett students in the class, whether you take the honors contract or not.
