Do athletes get any leeway in the admission's process?

I am a high school junior and i am wondering whether athletes get any weight in the university of pennsylvania admissions. I am a varsity coxswain (rowing) and hope to row in college. Will i be given admissions preference if i apply ED? i am also a legacy (parent and grandparent). How much leeway do athletes get, if any? Do i need to be 'recruited' to gain such preferential treatment? Would being an athlete/legacy make up for a somewhat weak GPA (3.76 unweighted)?

Thanks so much everyone!

I’d suggest you go to the athletic recruiting forum and look for threads on Ivy League Recruiting or the Academic Index. Yes, recruits can be given some slack with the admission standards.

If recruited, you get benefit. Try talking to the coaches. You’ll likely get an extra nod being a legacy ED applicant too. Hope your SATs are super and you can boos your GPA. GL to you.

If you don’t get recruited, athletics is simply counted as another extra-curricular. It’ll still help round out your application but you’ll be held to the same academic standard as normal applicants.

Okay, thanks for the help guys! the only problem is that crew is such an all-consuming sport that my list of extra curricular is quite limited. rowing is all year round. fall and spring practices consume all of my time during those seasons especially.

Further questions for anyone who might have some experience with college recruiting, or specifically penn recruiting rowing recruiting: what is the process like? is coxswain recruiting more/less competitive than rower recruitment? my team is based on the same river as the penn team is. will knowledge of the river as coxswain give me a leg up?

Any input is appreciated!

I think you can try referring you questions to this forum:

Put your questions there, and I think there would be more people who would be a little more knowledgable on this subject there.
