Rowing and Admissions at UPENN

I’m a sophomore in high school and I am about to start my second year of rowing. I’m very interested in attending UPENN because of the Wharton School of Business. I have good grades and last year as a freshman I pulled a 6:35 on the erg. If I am lucky enough to be recruited by UPENN in the future, would rowing help me get into Wharton or does to coach only have a presence in admissions for the general school? Do I have to apply to Wharton separately from UPENN or is it just one application?

Thank you

I believe you would only have to fill out one application for admission to any of the four schools at Penn, including Wharton. In terms of admission pull for coaches and their athletes, it likely varies by sport and by year. Most often if you are a recruited athlete, an admissions pre-read would be part of the process. You’d have a good idea of where your admissions chances stand prior to the formal application process. In terms of your times and specifics for your sport, I’m sorry I don’t have any idea if that is good or not. I hope that helps, others will likely have more specific information than I do.

Thank you nhparent9 for your response. It answered a lot of my questions. Does anyone know anything about the admissions process at Wharton specifically related to rowing?

As stated above you apply to the college with Wharton as your “pick” (there is some term for it) and you will have gone through a pre-read before and the coach will know if you are matched well for Wharton.
Are you a rising sophomore? If that’s the case a 6:35 is good. Most HWT recruits are sitting around 6:15-6:20 by the time they are looking to be recruited end of junior year. If you are a very high recruit with high AI stats a slower 2k would be ok.
Keep dropping that 2k and focus on your academics. For Ivies academics are a male or break so don’t drop the ball there.
Good luck!
