Do California State Universities use weighted or unweighted GPA?

I am a resident in Southern California as a Junior in highschool graduated in 2019. My current GPA right not is 2.5 unweighted and 2.65 weighted( I slacked off freshman year and I regret it). Anyways going back to my question is it unweighted or weighted GPA? Thank you so much I am very nervous. Also would you recommend me retaking courses over the summer that I did bad on(retaking C classes)

CSU’s use weighted capped GPA and only 10-11th grades for a-g courses. You can use the Rogerhub GPA calculator to calculate your CSU/UC GPA. You get extra honors points for UC approved HS honors/AP/IB or DE courses. You can look up the approved HS honors courses here.

So freshman and senior grades don’t really matter that much? I thought they looked at overall… anyways my Sophomore GPA is 2.9(weighted) and on Rogerhub it is 2.77.

Also I was on https://www2.calstate.edu/apply/eligibility-index, to see my eligibility and do I put in my unweighted or weighted GPA

this is going to sound like heresy but, you should take easier classes and try to get your GPA well above 3 this year. It will open up lots of doors.
good luck.

Thats exactly what I am doing, I am taking Photo( easy A) and Psychology this year to boost up my GPA. I am also thinking about retaking some classes over the summer. But will they accept it because its after junior year?

CSU’s use the capped weighted UC/CSU GPA in their Eligibility index calculation.

CSU’s do consider HS course rigor in their admission decisions, so taking easier classes for higher grades will bump up your CSU GPA, but they also give extra honors points for 8 semesters of UC approved Honors/AP/IB or DE courses. If you plan to target the top CSU’s such as Cal Poly SLO, Cal Poly Pomona, San Diego State, CSU Long Beach, Fullerton… you will need that HS course rigor. I suggest you also consider taking some of these Honor/AP courses in areas where you excel.

If you are not sure which HS courses will give you the extra Honors courses, check you HS on this link: https://hs-articulation.ucop.edu/agcourselist#/list/search/institution

Freshman grades matter in that you need to pass all a-g courses with a C or higher. Senior grades matter in that to maintain your provisional admission (acceptance) you also have to pass all a-g courses with a C or higher, it is just that 9th and 12th grades are not included in the CSU/UC GPA calculation. The exception is Cal Poly SLO that uses 9-11th grades in their GPA calculation.

Regarding your question about retaking classes the summer after Junior year. Yes, the CSU’s will consider them in you CSU application/GPA and you only have to report the repeat grades.

I got 2.69 unweighted on Rogerhub and 2.8 weighted which one do I use?

You use the 2.8 capped weighted for the Cal States but since you are a Junior, then you still need your 11th grades for the correct calculation.

@Gumbymom, there is one addition to the senior year requirements that students should know about. Cal Poly requires not only that students must pass all classes with a “C” or better, they must also maintain a 3.0 in all college prep course work for their senior year. Not all CSU’s have that the second part of that criteria. Sac State, Monterey Bay, and Sonoma State did not include that in their criteria. They are all “C-” or better.

Here is the applicable quote from the Cal Poly terms and conditions section of my son’s conditional acceptance last year:

"You must complete all coursework designated on your application, including those listed as “in progress” or “planned,” with a grade of “C” (or better) no later than the previous Spring Term for admission for the Fall Term. You must maintain the academic standard that allowed for your admission.

You must complete each term in your senior year with an overall 3.0 GPA in your College Prep Coursework."

@AMCdad: Thanks for the heads up on SLO’s policy. It looks like the same criteria as the majority of the UC’s. SDSU has a slightly different provisional admission policy than many of the Other CSU’s also. They state you have to pass all Senior classes not just the a-g courses with a C or higher.

@Gumbymom, you’re welcome. Cal Poly loves to be just a little bit different. Still, my son is enjoying his first term there, so I have no complaints.
