Do college professors remember students' names?

Can you go an entire semester with a professor not even knowing your name? Do most professors remember all of their students names, at least for the semester? If they don’t remember most of their names, what makes them remember certain people?

Depends. Some make a big effort to remember everyone’s names even in big lectures. Others don’t learn anyone’s names even in small classes. The bigger the class the less likely they are to learn names. If you speak up more, go to office hours, stuff like that, they’ll be more likely to remember your name. Possibly also if you just do well in their class.

Depends on the size of the class. It stands to reason that a professor is unlikely to learn all the names in a huge intro lecture class. And the people who do get recognized often do things, good or bad, that make them stand out.

Ah that is interesting! My professor remembered my name by our 2nd class which really surprised me since the class is pretty sizable (~50 students) I asked my friends, one of them said if they stand out they’ll remember you. My other two said if you’re hot they’ll remember you haha :stuck_out_tongue:

My largest class I’ve ever taken is 35 people and that was one of the largest classes in my entire college. All our professors learn our names fairly quickly.

All of my professors have learned my name with the exception of one (it was a 400 person science lecture) – even in classes with an upwards of 200+ students, I had professors learn my name. I usually met with them in office hours and they remembered my work when they graded them.

Depends.
Most learn the names of all of their students during the semester (provided it’s not a very large lecture class) but only retain the names of the best and worst students. (Personally, the only students I remember are the few I’ve had who have badly plagiarized and the few who were really proactive, passionate students.)

There’s this one professor that will memorize all of your names from photos before the class even begins.

This varies greatly depending on the school, class, and professor. I have had small classes where the professor didn’t deign to know people’s names, but I also had a 350 person ochem lecture where the professor knew every single person’s name. It really depends.

I’ve found that my foreign language teachers such as my Spanish teachers have really made it a point to learn everybody’s name. In this theater class I took that was even a bit over capacity, the instructor played this little game where she made us all learn each other’s name. She was pretty much the only person that was able to name all 50 without getting stuck/stammering and that was pretty impressive and funny :stuck_out_tongue:

On the other hand, my professors for science and history never remembered my name. The history one even would critique my work by putting Miss and I’m a dude! Like “very well done Miss xxxx”.

This is how a professor remembers your name. OP, you have to make the effort.

It depends. One of the professors that I had never wanted to know our names, he called us, idiot, or you, or “your face”. B-)

It depends on the professor. Professors are people just like students, and they vary. Some professors do make an effort to remember everyone’s names, but that’s way harder in a class of 200 than it is in a class of 20. Some professors don’t make the effort and won’t remember your name even in a class of 20 people.

What makes a professor remember your name?

-Sit towards the front.
-Ask thoughtful questions, when necessary.
-Turn in good work.
-Visit the professor’s office hours.

I tried to memorize names using the picture on the roster before class started, but I gave up. Many students uploaded older pictures or their hair was a different length or color than it was in the picture, or the picture simply wasn’t a good representation of what they looked like now. It actually confused me more than it helped.

I have a mild form of face blindness (or maybe I’m just clueless!) but I’ll remember your name and I’ll try really really hard to put your new hairstyle/hair color/weight loss/gain/change of clothes to it. But help me out by being interactive in class, ok?

Some professors make an effort to remember students names while others do not. If you visit them during office hours or ask modest questions then they will probably remember your name. One of my professor has a lecture hall of 200 students but she somehow remembers my name after visiting her once in her office. . . On the other hand, my calculus series professor has a class of 30, but explicitly states he is terrible with names so he makes no effort to remembers them. . . . If you are actively trying to learn and understand the concept and ask questions during lecture and you visit them during office hours, they will most likely remember your name.
