Do colleges admire EC quality or quantity?

I love going to my old elementary school and serving as a mentor for little students on their homework and plan fun activities. Although it’s only 1 time every week, I am dedicated to come and serve. Now, I’m not a pure sociable guy that always want to go around and do community service that I’m not passionate about. So, is it good to have a lot of hours over a variety of services or just have a passion of what you’re doing and your commitment to it? I always hear some say it’s quantity while others say it’s quality… What’s the important one?

Quality, it is 100% quality. Colleges can tell whether or not you do things just to be admitted into a school. I got into 10/12 of the schools I applied to (all below 50% selectivity rates) only doing ECs that I cared about. I had maybe a handful of ECs, but all of them showed my interest in writing, social issues, and journalism. ECs are also not as huge as people would have you believe - GPA/Scores are considered above anything, then come ECs/Recs/Essays

What you do, however, has to be something that really shows what you’re passionate about / what you want to do in life. Is community service/teaching/social work something you want to go into in life? Is it something you really love and care about?

Quality over quantity, but you don’t want to just have one EC (unless that singular EC is incredibly impressive, not just once a week community service).

Absolutely quality over quantity. But I agree that it is good to be involved in more than one EC – if nothing else it will broaden your horizons.
