Do colleges check how much Native American you are if you mark it?

I'm Native American and I am enrolled in a tribe and have a card and everything to prove it. Thing is, I'm not very much (less than 1/4th or 1/8th). I know that for NA's they have to put down their tribal number, so do they go and check how much exactly you are? Or does it not even matter how much I am since I have my tribal card?

Try here…

Unfortunately I didn’t see anything there about them specifically checking to see just how much Native American you are :/

Try POSTING there. But. I’m pretty sure it is only in a few situations where how much matters.

Haha oh, yeah…forgot. What situations would these be?

This is from the first post in the thread I linked.

Thanks! Bump

I don’t think it matters. If you are enrolled, then the colleges can’t question it. It is the tribes job to determine who is “enough” native american to be consider native american. So if you are enrolled and have a tribal number, I think you’re good!

Look at the CA application. If you mark NA, they ask if you are enrolled and if so, your number. Some colleges will send out forms asking for additional information to NA candidates, but as long as you’re telling the truth, you’re fine.

Bunp 10char

Do you not like the answers you’ve received so far? Everyone thinks you are fine.

No I do! I bumped it just in case anyone else had an opinion that differed from the ones above.

^If they do, they’d be incorrect ;).

If you’re registered I don’t think it would matter if you’re mixed. But I would recommend just for the sake of honesty marking all your races so that they can see that you’re not purely NA, plus then you can feel less guilty about it because you’re giving them all the information.

So if you mark only one race do they assume you are purely that race and nothing else?

Or do they take into consideration that a lot of people base it off of self identification?

Race and ethnicity for college admissions are based on self-identification. HOWEVER, the NA category is different from the other racial and ethnic categories, it is the ONLY one that asks for some kind of proof of identity (enrollment #).

The race question asks you to mark all categories that apply, so yes, to be honest you should be marking AI/NA and whatever other race(s) you are.

In the admissions process, you will be placed in the AI/NA pool of candidates even though you are of mixed race.

What is AI?

American Indian…oops haha, I knew that.
