When you apply to schools, do they know/ask where else you’re applying? Do they make conclusions about you from that?
No.
No, but when you are accepted somewhere and later decline their acceptance, they ask where you’re going and sometimes ask where else you were accepted. My son just declined a school and it asked why he isn’t going there and where he is going.
Some ask, and use it in assessing your level of interest.
Many colleges do not ask, and many do not consider level of interest.
Interesting to know! Figured they’d be curious, especially if you’re accepted but go somewhere else.
S20 received a lot of emails asking something along these lines.
The way it worked for him was some (not all) colleges sent emails asking if he had made a decision or if he was still considering his options. Some schools sent that email once. Some sent it a few times. Some sent it often.
If he replied “still considering”, sometimes he’d be prompted to take a poll that asked a)how many colleges he applied to, b)what were his top 3,4 or 5 choices, c)multiple choice question asking what the final decision might come down to, like price, location, etc.
Once he clicked “Not going to your school” on the emails, he also usually received the same sort of poll.
I remember reading that CSS Profile schools can see what other schools you included in the CSS Profile. Is that still the case?
I think FAFSA, not CSS, used to share your college list with all collegs on the list. It stopped such practice since 2016.
Does your high school counselor know when you’re accepted or not?
Yes, I believe many, but not all, colleges inform high school counselors of your acceptance.
If your email is DukeHopeful at gmail.com and you send a LOCI to Boston University saying that BU is your first choice that will hurt.
My D wasn’t asked/didn’t share where else she had applied during the application process but about half the schools she declined asked where she decided to attend.
Or worse, sending a LOCI to BU saying BC is your first choice😲
Off Topic, but when we toured Wake Forest last year, the AO mentioned an applicant who answered a prompt about “My Top Five …” and chose universities as his topic. He listed Wake Forest third.
An honest applicant .
