Hi, We are visiting a couple colleges out of state during spring break and have signed up for tours. Should we also reach out to the admissions counselor for our state so that we can stop by to say “hi” if they are on campus that day and put a face to the name while we are on campus? Or, will the counselor know we are there and if they are interested in meeting D, the counselor will reach out to her/us? Thanks for your thoughts.
I think this is a very school specific. Pretty sure my D only met one regional counselor in all our visits (and it turned out to be for a school she ended up not applying to after her visit). I would not assume that the counselors would reach out to you though.
D found it more helpful to ask to speak to professors in her intended major and/or sit in on a class.
My d did interviews at some visits; she was the one to request them. She didn’t even end up applying at a couple, but she was interested enough and they were far away so she killed two birds with one stone.
Thank you @momofsenior1 and @taverngirl I was thinking more like dropping by to meet the admissions counselor, not an interview. I’m not familiar with how big of a deal it is for the student to get to know the counselor or are they busy enough that they will reach out to the student if needed. I didn’t know if reaching out to them to meet while on campus would be a nice gesture or unnecessaryannoying for the counselor.
You could email them in advance and see if you can stop by.
I’m not sure that meeting the counselor is a big deal It’s maybe a nice, small “extra” but I don’t know that it would matter much. I think in all of our visits, my son maybe met one. A few regional counselors were milling about after the info session, and he went up and introduced himself and chatted for a very brief minute. That was it…he didn’t really have any personal contact with any of them in his search, really. But this would vary by school and applicant!
I agree with @TS0104 If you’re not interested in interviewing I don’t know if I’d bother popping in to meet a counselor.
My daughter met some counselors at her high school and at her dual enrollment school. Sometimes they were the same person and sometimes they were not. We ran into the lady from the dual enrollment school when we were visiting the school one time and she came over and talked to us about how happy she was to see my daughter visiting etc but I honestly doubt it had any impact.
Just to clarify the school we met the counselor from the dual enrollment school was a 4 year school my daughter was visiting for after high school graduation not connected at all to the dual enrollment school other than they went to the dual enrollment school to talk to students interested in transferring.
If you want to try, then I would ask if it would be possible in advance…you don’t know if they would be on campus, at lunch, in a meeting, interviewing others…
At small Lacs yes meet with admission counselor. It could be advantageous. At a large school… No… As stated you could ask but it might be awkward for your student.
We also met with professors etc. Much more helpful.
I say it could be helpful. We took a tour last summer and after the tour was over went back to where we started at undergrad admissions and had a few questions about things and just asked one of the folks there. She then took the initiative to contact the counselor for our area who was super nice and took a lot of time with us to answer all our questions, gave us her card, and told us to email her anytime. This was for my D-22, the summer before her sophomore year of high school, at a state university (enrollment 18000). Still have the card from the counselor and still on my D-22’s list of possible schools.
