Because im going to a very good hs that only acceptes 150 freshman a year and its like a music hs so everyone is required to be in a performing group. Its the 45th best hs in the nation (on usnews.com). its supposed to be one of the highest performing high schools in california. In ony six classes that have graduated students have went to all the UC's, been to most of the ivy leagues including harvard, been to stanford and USC,its also supposed to have a much harder curriculiam then many of the other schools. So by going to this are my chances better then someone who went to a regular hs.

They’ll take into account your school rigor/rank.

You’ll have an advantage, but don’t count on that to carry you over.

thanks this helps

Probably not. I went to a high school up in Washington State that’s ranked in the 30’s nationwide, and the colleges don’t take that into account very often. You had the same classes and curriculum as the other people, so there’s no reason why you should have lower grades. I’m in the same situation by the way.

are you sure because many students transfer to our hs havig a 4.0 gpa and once they come here they usualy say they start geting B’s on there report cards, even the priciple of the school says that there curriculiam is tougher then the other hs

I’ve been told that it only really matters when they are trying to compare two similar applicants.

Going to a good school doesn’t mean that a lower GPA will be overlooked. You’ll have an advantage over other students that have the same stats as you though…

Curriculum accounts for the grade drop more than the actual “hardness” of the school. I had integrated math at my old school which was considered honors, and it’s a joke compared to the straight-up math I do now at an academic level.

Most colleges have regional counselors who are quite familiar with the HS in their areas. If your school’s curriculum is significantly more rigorous than the average school, they’ll know and will take that into consideration.
And of course, if you’re applying to local unis, they are already familiar with your school.

Don’t put too much faith in USNWR and US News rankings. I’m not saying this as some bitter student whose school isn’t on the list; my school is always well within the top 100. But there’s no real way to rank public schools and colleges don’t really care about what ranking your school is on the list. If you’re from TJ or Stuy or the like, they know your school and it matters a lot. If you’re from some other school that’s pretty high up, a regional counselor is likely to know it, provided that a student is applying to a school with regional counselors, but it won’t make a big difference.

Well, what if you go to the best or 2nd best Highschool in your country? Thats my situation My classmates are billionaires and royalty, does that help? and yes, our alumni are everywhere from Harvard, MIT, Brown, Switzerland, etc.

how would they know that on my application? +its super hard, you have to academically fight for bits and scrapes on the floor called As and A-s…and the super elusive A+

oh your cool

^
Ha Ha Ha !!!

Look less at your school’s rigor and more at where your school sends grads. Your school has a pretty impressive record. Other schools whose classes are equally difficult but who colleges are less acquainted with might not stand as good a chance.

do they look at everyones school… like will they physically look up where people went in my high school?

I was talking to Stanford’s Admissions Officer and he said they have a list of all the high schools in the country ranked more or less…

I don’t think they go through the trouble of searching up EVERYONE’S high school though. Just in really tough cases.

I don’t think US News and Reports is really that reliable.
there’s some public school around here that ALWAYS has over 30 National Merit Scholars a year out of a class of ~700 and it’s nowhere to be seen on the rankings.
while some other school that usually gets 2 or 3 a year is like ~50 on rankings. makes no sense.
