Do colleges seriously look at 1st quarter grades?

I am applying to U-Mich and CMU as EA/ED school. I am taking 4 AP classes and 1 honor class this year and I am not doing well (83~86) on AP Calculus and AP Physics. I am extremely worried since they are core classes for engineering students. Do colleges look at my 1st semester grade thoroughly? Do I have an option to not just send it unless they asked me to send one?

They don’t ask you, they ask your GC - and no, it’s not optional. Well, it is, but you won’t get in without it. B or above tends to be the limit, so you might be okay, but I’d definitely try to at least get up to a B+. A B- might be fatal for an engineering applicant, depending on other factors like your math scores.
