The people I know are recruited when they were juniors. So I'm just wondering if I still have a chance. I'm going to be a senior. Track and Field thrower since freshman year.

How far have you thrown?

Are there schools that your trying to get recruited by?

You can still get recruited senior year but your marks would have to be amazing.

It depends mostly on what type of college you are wanting to attend. D1 recruits early but that does not mean there is not a college out there for you. NAIA schools recruit well into senior year as well as D2 and D3 schools.
You need to promote yourself and contact coaches, they are not just going to find you.

YES, in some sports they are still recruiting now for the incoming class for fall 2013 in some sports…the recruit season usually ends on the first day of classes.

If you’re good enough, the recruiting season might be open until the last day applications are accepted. If an 4:00 miler called a coach in mid-December, I’m sure they’d talk.

From what I know, for D3 the recruiting is just starting and goes well into halfway of the senior year…for D1 obviously it starts much earlier. But a friend of my sons is going to a big lacrosse D1 program and got recruited in March of this year (the year he was graduating) so it does happen. He needed to bring up his scores which he was able to do.

A LOT depends on your performance, but you can absolutely still be recruited! I know from what I have read here that the Ivy leagues have a very early and different timetable but based on my familys experience recruiting for D1 goes well into the spring season. A top five D1 mens track coach personally told us he recruits until the first day of fall classes.

This time last year, before the start of his senior year, my son had only received the typical form letters from coaches, however, after he posted some great marks in early indoor season (he also does a field event) he starting getting phone calls and responses to e-mails. He did not take his first visit until late Jan. and although he signed late Feb., he was still getting calls from coaches into April. (I will point out there were no recruiting violations, once he told them he had signed elsewhere all the coaches said they could not talk to him anymore).

But the point for you is that he was a senior in spring semester and coaches were still recruiting. For various reasons situations change (kids dont get admitted, verbal commits change their mind, etc.) and opportunities come up late in the process.

The best advice is to initiate contact with schools/coaches you are interested in and apply by the regular application deadlines, typically late fall. It is easier to sell yourself to a coach if you are already admitted and looking for a little help or to confirm a roster spot, than if you havent shown any interest in attending the school. Many of the big D1 track schools have pretty clear admission guidelines on their website, so if your academics are solid, e-mail the coach now, since it is after July 1 and then can respond if there is any kind of fit. We got our best responses from the event specific coach, so you may want to start there.

Thank you very much everyone for the replies! I’ve been working really hard to improve. I’ve been lifting and throwing. I’m not athletically gifted so I already accepted the fact that I must work harder. I’m really grateful for all your replies. =)

If you have more info, please don’t hesitate to post them. =)

Just heard of another kid from my sons school who got confirmation of being accepted to a pretty good D1 college (one he really wanted to attend but they stopped communicating with him after his scores/transcript came through) Then apparently he worked very hard in the spring and my son told me last night that he ended up getting accepted to that school. He was slated to do a PG year at a nearby boarding school to improve his chances in a year…glad it worked out for him. Talk about the 9th hour!

Have you registered with NCAA? Do that. My daugher was recruited during her senior year at her sport.
