I just got accepted to SLO and I’m applying for housing right now. Since I’m a transfer student, I’m guessing if I get lucky I’ll get housing at Cerro. Do you guys know if Cerro comes with parking? If not, where can I park my car? How much will I have to pay for parking? Thanks.

No, no dorms at all provides parking. There will be big parking lots for students, but you have to pay for a parking permit. I don't know the actual price, but I would assume it'll be in the several hundreds.

wait zac, did you just get accepted tonight?

Cal Poly Campus Map

R=residential Parking Cerro shares parking behind red bricks, first come first serve (ie, every time you move your car, you find a new space...) There is usually plenty of space, sometimes just not that close

Oh yeah, fees... Parking permit is somewhere just over a $100 a quarter. Get the yearly, it will save you a few bucks.

Thanks for info kirbsanmom

Re: j.irvin020
No, I got accepted about two weeks ago for the Industrial Engineering major. I hope you get in too.

Hey thanks zac and congratulations on getting into the industrial engineering program, don't know much about that major.

One thing I should warn you about, parking wise... The meter maids are ruthless! they can smell an expired meter 2 minutes before it happens. The lots are by permit, but there are a few metered spaces close in Cerro upper. Just don't get caught without coins or a permit, not even for a second... You can pay parking tickets on your myPoly page, btw

I've heard that it's pretty easy to get along without a car; a bike is sufficient. Public transit is also excellent and free to students. Plus, those with cars end up schlepping around those without.
Thoughts?

lol, the meter maids are far from ruthless, i see cars parked in a metered space that is expired for hours.

Yes, bikes are pretty much the norm around SLO. Heck once a month barring bad weather there is bike night where everyone comes and we have a mini bycicle parade around downtown. Its fun, but you gotta be there to really get it.

Bikes are perfect for around campus, but get something with at least a few gears cuz everywhere on campus (and around town) is a little hilly, but nothing scary once you do it just a little.

There is campus market for some minor grocery needs, but it is pretty bleak if you actually want to make food. The nearest grocery store is Scolaris which is about a 10 min ride, or about 2 miles from the furthest freshman dorms. the other is Albertsons, about 2 miles away, but also much more uphill than to scolaris. Downtown is just a little further than scolaris, and the thursday market there is bomb. Fresh veggies, really good entertainment and all sorts of food establishments there.

Just one reccomendation, if you are going to have a bike, make sure it isn't something too expensive and flashy, bike thefts are kinda high around campus at night for bikes like that.
