I know it's a really broad question, but I'm just having so many second thoughts as to whether I'll have any job prospects once I'm done with undergrad. I'm currently a rising senior in HS and I know my passion is in filmmaking, but I'm just curious as to what kind of jobs film majors get once they graduate because let's face it, no one makes a feature film their first year out of college.

Thanks for the help

*No trolls please.

Yes, they do, but rarely in film. Most film studies majors, I’d imagine, end up in advertising, marketing, and similar fields that require more “creative” thought processes. Go ahead and major in film studies but also make sure to cast a wide net, interning in other fields to develop a more practical skill set. I’m an English major and my internships have been in nonprofit management and business consulting. I’m also co-authoring a book, so I am pursuing what I enjoy, but I’m not staking everything on becoming a famous novelist. Do the same and you should be fine.

It’s rough out there. Film production is not a terribly useful major when you consider the number of jobs vs. the number of people interested in it. If you go to a good school and get solid work experience, you will have a shot at a decent job. Otherwise, you may find yourself doing unpaid internships or working at Walmart after graduation.

I was going to major in film. I decided to switch to advertising because of job security. You dont need a degree to make films or get work, just a good reel.

@that1guyy I’ve really been considering doing that (majoring in Advertising) and just working on films on the side. What school do you go to? What is the curriculum like?

When it comes to hiring, curriculum rarely matters as much as a school’s reputation.

@DannyBoy5,

I attend community college now. so I couldn’t tell you what the curriculum is like since I’m just completing Gen Ed stuff. However, some good schools I’m looking at to transfer to:

Syracuse University, Boston University, Fordham University, Pepperdine University, Chapman University, all have advertising majors. You can look at the course lists on their respective websites to get an idea of what goes on in classes.

Also, I’m considering majoring transferring to a school with a communications studies major. While it doesn’t have specific advertising courses such as the Universities listed above, students from a communications major who emphasize in mass communications potentially can work in advertising. Its not hands on, but theoretical media studies type courses.

Some schools that I’m considering for a communications major are, USC, UCLA, and NYU. Note, these schools also offer film as a minor if you want.

And Fordham, Boston U, Suyracuse, Chapman, and Pepp also have film departments. Pm me if you need clarification or have questions.
