Do I bother studying for finals that won't affect my grade?

I just calculated out what I need to score on my final exams, and found that for 3 of my classes, I have to basically fail the exam not to get an A for the course. So do I even bother studying? Obviously, it's a beautiful weekend, and I don't really want to spend Sunday in studying. I have to get a 61 on the Spanish exam not to get an A! It's crazy how bad I have to do. I know the material pretty well, and will definitely be able to get high B's with the studying I've done so far. The classes are pretty easy, and the exams will be too. An in those courses, I would actually have to get a negative score on the final in order to get anything below a B in the class.

Well, it’s as you want, really. If you do it for the grades, go ahead. But if you’re in it for the sake of learning, you can study. Do you think you’ll be able to get the graded you calculated if you don’t study? Do you think you’ll feel guilty if you dont? If not, don’t study and enjoy your weekend.:)

Don’t study, enjoy your summer. You know the material, don’t let anyone guilt you into wasting your time studying for something that doesn’t matter. If you calculated the minimum grade you need, you know you don’t actually care about doing well on a test where your only reward would be bragging rights.

Thanks for the advice, pshap91. The only possible effect could be the difference between an A and an A-minus, but as I found out from the other thread, this difference doesn’t even matter in the scheme of things.

double post

My principle is that if you haven’t learned the material throughout the year, studying for a weekend will not help…and that works the other way around, too.

…but that’s just me! Last-minute studying may work for some–I don’t know.

this does not apply for easy self-study ap’s like psychology and human geo :). op, don’t study.

Actually, studying for a weekend really makes that grade difference on the test.

Nope. Enjoy your early summer haha =]. I didn’t have to study for one final this year and my stress level is soo much lower than everyone else’s. It’s kind of nice. You’ll enjoy it too.

Finals show up on your transcript, so you better study. Failing a final is just lazy.

Grade Engineering at it’s finest. Though I would never throw a final (and rarely need to study for them since most teachers just rehash old material), I have done something similar with regular course grades. I’ll calculate how much work I actually need to do in order to keep a solid A and then just not do the last 2 or 3 assignments if I don’t have to. Some people call it cheating, some call it crazy, one teacher thought it was brilliant.

I’m not exactly sure if colleges would frown upon low exam grades. In then end, I think that they just look at the final semester grade.

I think it’s okay to be lazy sometimes if it doesn’t haven any adverse effects. In this case I doubt it would.

It’s not like I’m planning on failing the exams. I’m just planning on getting B’s instead of going for the A, so I can spend more time studying for one exam that I have to get an A on, or I will get a B for the entire course. And I will have extra free time.

Finals do NOT show up on your transcripts. Only your semester or year grades do.

Free time is nonexistent during the week before finals. That’s what summer is for.

Planning on getting a B in order to get an A in another course is fine though.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I have had above 100 all year for Spanish, and I had to do one huge speaking project anyways. However, all I need was a 50 to still have an A+ for the year. So, I winged it, and got a 90. I know if I would have studied, I could have gotten a 100, but once you are at our level, who really cares?

Don’t bother.

Why are you even asking?

Don’t bother.

I needed something like a 58 to keep my A in pre-calc junior year. I didn’t bother studying, and got an 86 (interesting enough, I think it was the highest grade in the class).

I wouldn’t bother either. Last year, in order to receive an A in AP Euro, I needed a 9 on a MC final exam. My teacher threatened, jokingly, to give me an 8. I didn’t study and got a 98.

Be thankful that you are in this situation, considering there are many students who do not have this liberty.

“Finals do NOT show up on your transcripts. Only your semester or year grades do.”

Finals DO show up on your transcript as they are factored into your semester grades. Colleges have the ability to see your quarter grades, exam grades, and semester grades, and while an exam grade might not affect your GPA, colleges can still see it. Getting a B is fine, getting an F is not.
