Hi all,
Like many others, I’m awaiting my early action admissions decision to my top choice, georgetown university. I would like an honest opinion as to whether or not I have a chance. No need to sugar coat.
Walsh school of foreign service
31 act(32 superscore but I don’t think Gtown does that)
3.95 unweighted gpa, 4.5 weighted
All straight A’s honors and AP
I thought my essays were really good, but I’m sure opinions could differ
No class rank
250 hours of community service
nhs, spanish nhs
President of community service group for homeless shelter in community
Taught English as a second language
Currently working at law office
President of history nhs
Speak 4 languages
3 sport athlete
Mock trial(place top in state out of 130+ teams)
Conducted science research and trip on endangered species in Africa
Recipient of a Japanese-American peace scholarship, conducted speeches and met with Japanese and American officials
What worries me is that I think I’m qualified, however, there are so many other qualified applicants. My standardized tests also aren’t the best.
We have pretty similar stats, and Georgetown (along with UChicago) is my number 1, too! What really stands out to me is the fact that you speak 4 languages—I’m sure the AO will love that. Especially because you’re applying to SFS. Your ECs are strong and somewhat concentrated (in language). I think your chances of getting in EA are pretty good; based on what I’ve read, EA students are generally stronger, and your GPA reflects that. Your ACT is on the lower end of the middle 50% of accepted applicants, but so long as your essays are as strong as you believe and your interview goes well, I think you have a good chance!! Could you chance me back on my thread?
@Deaston
My sat subjects weren’t great so I chose to not send them to ea. I will retake them if I get deferred. For EA georgetown sees no subject tests as a complete application; however, if I get deferred I will have to send subject tests in for my application to be complete
You have excellent extracurricular activities. Being Georgetown an R1 institution, having research as a HS student on your resume is quite significant. I can also see leadership positions and diversity in your interests.
You seem to be in the range of the typical ACT scores for Georgetown. So that’s a good sign. Indeed, it is not the best or most competitive score, but you have other things to compensate for. Be mindful that these applications are reviewed holistically. When I was applying for college, I thought my test scores would affect me negatively. But I had other elements in my application that suggested I was a competitive applicant. Now, I attend Hopkins.
Overall, don’t stress too much about it. You have great credentials. If the results don’t turn out as expected, there is always a solution.
@AdventuresAbroad You are aware that Georgetown requires you to send in ALL test scores, not just the ones that you choose to send in? If you’ve taken a subject/SAT/ACT, you MUST send them to the admissions office, according to their policy.
If you haven’t taken SAT subject tests at all, you can apply EA. Once you take a test, Georgetown requires you to send them. There’s no way of knowing whether or not they can tell if you’ve sent in all your scores, so I suggest being on the safe side and just send them in.
The ACT is a bit below average and the GPA is above average. So in terms of stats, you’re a solid applicant. This makes Georgetown probably a borderline reach/low reach. What we don’t know is how they’ll view the qualitative aspects of your app.
