what do you think????

Does your HS have naviance? If so, have you looked at W&L for your HS?

I've looked for my S at various naviance sites. It looks like they are very SAT centric in their admissions and that you need close to a 1350 or better.

There are so many factors that play in admissions. It's hard to just look at the 4 hour exam and say that it alone is determinative. But at some schools that is just the way it is.

Rather than just concentrate on W&L, do you have safeties and matches that you'd like to attend?

Good luck.

To contradict musictoad on one angle (you need higher SAT scores), and prove him/her on another (there are a variety of factors):

I had low SAT scores (below the median) for W&L and ACT scores in the high range (of the median) but was accepted ED1. I had a variety of other things going for me that you do as well. To name a few...

-geographic diversity
-ethnic diversity
-talented in a specific sport/extracurricular activity

So while I can't tell you that you're going to get in, waitisted, rejected, etc., just stay positive and believe that everything that happens will work out for the best.

Dima will probably respond soon to your post. He knows what he's talking about.

Actually Summer, I am going to stick to my policy of not analyzing chances simply because there are so many things you can't post in a forum (some of those things like teacher recs, interview analysis and essays will be giving me paper cuts in about half an hour) and because there are always things that vary from year to year in admissions (for example a soccer player may have an advantage if most of the class so far does not play soccer or if a lot of soccer players are graduating but may have a disadvantage if a bunch of soccer players were accepted ED).

Since the deadline has passed, there is not much you can do to improve your chances anyway. Just focus on your schoolwork (midyear grades count!!!) and on any other apps you still have left to do (other schools, fin aid, scholarships) and wait and hope.

PS: Responding to something musictoad said - while it is certainly true that many schools focus far too much on SAT scores, that is usually not the case in elite small schools like W&L. When you have to pick a class of thousands, you can't be looking for students who "are the right fit" because the culture is so varied that everyone is the right fit so you just look at pure numbers. But in a small, elite school, you want a class that is not only strong academically but is diverse, is made up of people who are leaders (which you see through extracuricculars, essays, recs, etc), who bring a lot to a classroom (something that is important in a school with classes of under 25 but meaningless in schools with large lecture halls of 250 - this aspect is seen through teacher recs), are athletic (much of W&L fits this category with three tiers of competition - varsity, club, intramural - and most people taking part in at least one of them), etc.

At W&L and similar elite LAC's, applicants are not just numbers in a points system - they are people being judged by what they would bring to Lexington.

Of course (and this is my third edit of the above post), that does not mean numbers don't matter and successful W&L applicants are usually well over 1300 on their SAT's and are top 10-15% of their class (though this differs by school, someone who is in the top 25% at Stuyvesant may look better than someone in the top 5% at Milford High School in Milford, DE)

Well, I understand my rank/GPA are a big factor and will work against me, but i'm hoping Dima is right in that my low scores/GPA won't keep me out of the running.

Thanks for all those who responded, and to Musictoad; I've gotten into two safeties, and should be getting into my state school, but I would really like to attend W&L.

washingtonian, if you conveyed that in your essay and interview (if you had one) - that should really help

I can't say this enough but whatever college you're applying to (and this goes especially for smaller schools), showing adcoms that you are excited and REALLY want to attend that school is a big bonus. (Just don't lie and pretend you do when you don't - that's just wrong)

BTW, at least in the freshmen class, there are a bunch of people here from the Seattle area - don't know why - so you wouldn't feel lonely if you came all the way out here. There's a guy on my floor who is a HUGE Seahawks fan. Just thing it's kind of strange considering it's all the way across the country.

W&L is a great school and I can understand why lots of people want to go there. I would like S to shoot them an app next year.

Don't misunderstand me. I know there are lots of factors in an admission decision and that adcoms are building a community.

But looking at the scattergrams I look for exceptions to the SAT/ACT 25-75 scoring ranges and I don't see very many for W&L.

I think a 1350 is an excellent score--about an 88% IIRC--and provides you with a fighting chance. You've got the base and have built a case to argue for admission.

There are some schools that exhibit anamolies in their scattergrams and are excellent top 20 schools. But I don't think W&L is one of those.

It's important to remember just what the 25-75 benchmark means. It does not mean that almost everyone who gets in is in that range. That range has only 50% of the admissions. There is another 25% admitted who are above and 25% who are below that range.

I love Seattle! I have a ton of family out there, and was looking at UW for RD before getting in.

Also keep in mind that the middle 25-75 is for ENROLLED students. So this means that they accept a lot more people with higher scores who end up going elsewhere (Duke, Ivies, etc.).

Yeah, washingtontian, you def have a chance. I had a 1330 and a 3.412 GPA. I got in on the waiting list, but I got in, and that's all that matters.

Oh, and no AP classes either.

alright... thanks. Btw, are freshmen allowed to join the frats?

We have formal rush in the winter - as soon as you get back from holiday break - a week where you go to fraternities for dinner and dessert and decide where you will pledge. After that and an eight-week new member education, you are initiated into the fraternity. I'm actually typing this from the library of the fraternity I am pledging.

So the answer is yes, but you cannot pledge until winter and don't become a brother until mid-March.
