Do I get to choose ANY major I want if I get accepted in a university?

Do I get to choose ANY major I want if I get accepted in a university?
Because in my country, every major in college has a different way of evaluating students, which means I can’t choose any major I like
Just wondering if it’s the same in the us?
Thanks

In the US you can choose any major as long as the college provides it. Minors however sometimes require a certain GPA.

You need to get accepted to the school in which the major is offered. So if you go to X State, and are accepted into the arts college, you will not be able to be a business major or engineering major, unless they let you switch schools once you are there…

^That is only applicable to universities that 1) have different colleges or schools within them and 2) prohibit students from transferring between schools and colleges once they are admitted. Those kinds of universities are actually pretty uncommon, and most of the time, you can transfer from one major to another.

In certain public universities - like in California - certain majors may be “impacted” which means they are super-popular and there’s not enough room for all the people who want that major. So admission is competitive and you may not be able to switch into that later. But other than that, at most colleges and universities in the U.S., you can major in whatever you want and change your major to virtually anything the institution offers.
