If I am admitted into a university, can I major in anything I want?

Could I be accepted into a university but not be admitted into a specific college or major?

Thanks

Some very specialized departments don’t have to accept everyone. e.g. architecture, theater studies, vocal performance, etc. These will need audition, review before admittance.

But most college majors don’t have this hurdle. It all depends on your major and the school you’re attending.

Okay let’s just say I wanted to major in Computer Science at UC Berkeley or Carnegie Mellon, both ranked #1 Comp Science programs in the country by US News. Or what if I tried Material Engineering at uIllinois–Urbana-Champaign ranked #2 in the country in that major. Then would that be an issue?

It really depends on the school. For some colleges, you can get accepted by the university but not your program (and you get your 2nd choice major). Others give out a flat rejection and that’s it.

If you’re talking about switching majors within one college (usually the College of Arts and Sciences), that’s fine–indeed, expected. But for schools within a university (usually engineering, design, architecture, nursing, business) you will have to apply specifically to that college, and transferring to another college will involve a separate admissions process.
