Do I have a chance at any Ivy League schools?

Hi everyone,

People have been telling me a lot lately that I should be applying to at least one Ivy League school. Personally, I don't think I'm anywhere close to being up to par with those standards but I figured I'd see what you all thought.

Academically:

Freshman year I took 3 honors classes and 2 standard classes and got all As.
Honors Geometry, English, Spanish; Standard Bio, History

Sophomore year I took 5 honors classes and got 3 As and 2 Bs (in History and Chem: both 89).
Honors English (short stories/poetry), Spanish II, Chem, Algebra II, and US History I

Junior year I took 2 AP classes and 3 honors classes. 3 As and 2 Bs (in History and Spanish: 88 and 87).
AP English Lang & Comp, Bio; Honors Spanish III, Pre-Calculus, and US History II

Senior year I'm taking 3 AP classes and 2 honors classes. I currently have all As except for English (83).
AP English Lit & Comp, Calculus AB, and Psychology; Honors Physics, Anatomy & Physiology

Weighted, my GPA is a 4.401 on my school's 4.0 scale. I'm 11th in my class of 187 at a competitive public school. (Top 5%).

Standardized Tests:

My combined SAT score is a 2070. 800 math, 670 writing, 600 reading).

I took the Biology SAT II and the Math I SAT II. 690 and 720, respectively.

Extracurricular Activities:

Student Council (all 4 years). National Honor Society. I have been invited to and joined the National Society of High School Scholars (since Sophomore year). I am the secretary of our school's Academic Decathlon team. I have been on the school's varsity track and field team since freshman year. I was in the video club freshman year. I've been in Yearbook since freshman year. I received the bronze and silver medals for my scores on the National Spanish Exam. I am the treasurer of the Student Council Executive Board.

Leadership Positions: Business manager of yearbook, Treasurer of Student Council Executive Board, and Secretary of Academic Decathlon ('11-'12), ('10-'11)

Job Experience:

Summer of 2010 I held 3 community service jobs (2 libraries and helped out at town events). Not paid.

I've been working at a Supermarket for a little over a year and a half now. Planning to stay till I leave for college.

I'm an intern at a local advertising company. I edit marketing and commercial videos and graphics.

I have a little less than 100 hours of community service.

Random Things:
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Gender: Male
Religion: Catholic

Essay is about the struggle my great grandparents went through on their journey from Italy to the US and how problems outside of the US are so much greater than we can imagine. Which inspired me to help other people, leading me to start a lollipop fundraiser to help the victims of the tsunami in Japan.

All comments, thoughts, suggestions, etc. are appreciated very much!

Also, not a big deal but I got a 5 on both AP exams junior year.

You should only apply if you want to. Is there any particular school you are drawn to?

I haven’t really looked into them because I always assumed they were so out of reach for me. But if I had to choose, I suppose Cornell, Brown, or UPenn maybe.

There are chances but u need really work on ur essays or improve ur Sat

You have a chance, but if you could improve your SAT score that would be better. But if you don’t really like any of them, then there’s no point in applying. Look at them and if you like them, then apply because you never know! If you don’t like them, don’t apply just because they’re Ivy League schools.

You definitely have a chance. Show your best self and make sure you leave them with a strong impression of how you would positively affect the college. Of course you know it’s competitive, but your grades are very strong, you ECs are good (but generic … nothing stands out uniquely), and your SATs are on the lower end for an Ivy but still in the ball park. Hours of community service don’t really say much, but if you led the effort or coordinated the whole school while doing that, it would be more meaningful. If you are a strong enough athlete (varsity track) you could also get a bonus point there if you plan to play a varsity sport in college, but since you didn’t bring it up, I assume that is not a possibility. Go for it, and good luck.

They are most probably out of reach. If you look at their common data sets, very few with a 600 CR score are admitted. Those that are have a major hook.

I think Cornell and UPenn could be in the running if you write stellar essays. If they’re your dream schools… Just apply and see what happens :)

Answer mine? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1260515-chance-senior-georgetown.html</a></p>

Probably not.
Admissions this year is insane.

I would say your chances are very low. Admissions are getting harder and harder each year, and with your SAT/GPA you would definitely be considered in the lower percentile. If you have the time, apply to one or two of them, but I would say only do this after you’ve finished applying to the other schools you wanted to go to.

Why apply anywhere because “people” think you have a shot?

Apply where YOU want to go.

Here’s some data you can use to calibrate what your chances actually are . . . I doubt that the “people” will understand these . . .the Ivies are a reach for almost everyone.

These are data from Brown, and are generalizable to the other Ivies:
Rejection rate of students with an 800 Math SAT: 80%
Rejection rate for those in top 10% of HS class: 90%
Rejection rate of Salutatorians: 86%
[Brown Admission: Facts & Figures](<a href=“Undergraduate Admission | Brown University”>Undergraduate Admission | Brown University)

Apply to one or more of those if you want . . your chances - despite your excellent record - make them a reach . . like they are for almost everyone.

Good luck!!!

Selective colleges don’t place that much importance on AP scores, actually. They just give them a glance. 5’s probably won’t automatically win you a spot because of how curved the AP tests are

I would retake the SAT for a higher CR score. Otherwise you aren’t looking too bad. Isn’t it kind of late for you to just now be considering adding an Ivy though? Nonetheless, good luck.

Everything else is fine. It’s upto your essays.

There is no need to apply to one of the schools in the Ivy League, unless one of the schools particularly appeals to you. You may or may not get in - you are certainly a strong student and there is no doubt there are many schools that would love to have you.

Nahhhh don’t do ivy league. Too many geeks, no parties
