Well, I am starting my college applications and I was just wondering if I had a shot at these schools before I bother with applications.

My unweighted GPA is 3.8, weighted is 4.22.
My class rank is 35/585
My academic classes are AP level, and my electives are honors courses.
SAT - 2050 (Taking again in October)
ACT - 35
SAT Subject Tests (Taking in November)
77 Hours of Volunteer Work
I had a job the summer of my junior year
Extra Curricular - National Honor Society, Junior Engineering Technical Society, Brainbowl

I was planning on applying to:
MIT
Cal Tech
Harvard
Yale
Stanford

stats are fine if you can get your SATs up

all depends on what extracurricular you have done, what community service you do, recs, essays, interviews annnnnd minority status, income, etc.

those schools are reaches for everyone....i recommend you search for a couple of match schools and have u of florida as safety

the schools listed are a reach for everone, i would disagree with georgeanne and sweetgirl. a 35 on the ACT scales to a 2320 or so, and theyre supposed to consider the higher of the tests you submit. other than that, the only thing i can see you lack is leadership

excellent essays should give you a decent chance

wow! you're almost exactly the same as me with the SAT scores and GPA (mines only a little higher) I'm retaking the SAt in oct too, good luck! the only thing is you may need more ECs, or more of a leadership role, or concentrate on one or 2 of those
good luck

Hmm, so far a lot of people have been telling me have no chance with these schools, but some say I have a shot.

Are there other schools I should apply to instead, I wanted to go to a good engineering or physics school, but if I cant get into one with a good program and prestige, I might as well go UF. I still plan on applying to MIT anyways, since that is one school I really want to get into, and maybe Stanford also. But maybe Ill drop my other ones and lower my standards.

And I was wondering what impact my AP scores would have on my chances.

AP World History - 5
AP American History - 4
AP Language and Composition - 5
AP Chemistry -2 (I was running a fever that day and couldn't concentrate, should I cancel this score or would a 2 look better then no score?)

and my courses this year are

AP Physics C
AP Calculus AB
AP Macroeconomics
AP American Government
AP Literature
Honors Astronomy
Honors CAD/Drafting 4
Honors Theater History

it says that it gives you your chances at any college in the country based on their admission critreia and it seemed reasonable to me. anyway you should check it out especially for the top schools like mit and stanford

I think you need some more match schools - I mean, you have some high reaches and a safet, but where are some schools that are more reasonably within your reach?

Well I was also thinking about applying to Georgia Tech, Cornell, Purdue, University of Michigan - Ann Arbor, and Carnegie Mellon. I just haven't decided which ones other then MIT and UF I am applying to yet, those are just ideas. My main goal right now is to finish my MIT EA application.

As far as minority status and income.

I am half Korean/half Caucasian
My family income would probably fall in the 50,000-60,000 range (Although the MIT application didnt ask)
My father received an Associates Degree and my mother has no degree.

I don't think you being half Asian will help. They are overrepresented at colleges. People who usually get a lift are Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Native Americans, and Black/African American. All these groups are underrepresented at colleges, especially at top colleges.

Your stats are good though, I wouldn't worry too much babe. Just impress them with your admission essay(s). If submitting your SAT scores, I would retake it.

Your chances of getting into the absolutely top schools like MIT, Stanford, and Caltech are hurt by your unimpressive ECs. But you will do very well on the next level down. I would say in at GTech, Cornell, Purdue, U of M, and Carnegie Mellon, assuming you score over 700 on all of your subject tests.
