Hi, I’m currently a junior and I was wondering what my chances are for Cornell Engineering ED 2023.
(I’m a white female)
UW GPA: 3.71
(My school doesn’t offer class rank or weighted GPAs, but I am taking the highest (honors-level) courses in Math, Science and Spanish. I am taking one level lower for English + US History.
Freshman and sophomore year I took all of the highest courses the school has to offer. This year and sophomore year I have taken multiple STEM based electives – I have a good relationship with my teacher and he is writing one of my recommendations.
My school does not offer APs, but they offer an equivalent. Most of these courses are only available for seniors. For next year, my courseload is AP BC Calculus, AP Physics, AP Spanish Literature, Entrepreneurship (this is labeled as an AP in the course catalog even though it technically isn’t), AP Macroeconomics, and advanced English.
ACT: 35
Breadown:
English - 36
Math - 35
Reading - 34
Science - 35
ECs
Clubs
Member of Robotics Club
Member of my school’s A Capella Group
Vice President/Founding Member of my school’s chapter of Amnesty International
Former Treasurer/Current President of a movie-making club. This year I produced a 20-ish minute long film that will premiere in my school.
Member of my school’s Drama Club
Music:
Violin/Voice
Former Member of my school’s orchestra – dropped out to pursue more opportunities in STEM
Current private violin/voice study
Studied at a conservatory and a SUNY school for voice
I am most likely planning on sending in a voice supplement
Volunteering/Work
I am a tutor (mainly math/science but for middle school kids I tutor everything). On a typical week, I will tutor anywhere from 6 to 8 hours, though during testing weeks I tutor more frequently. For one student I improved his math grade from a D+ to an A-.
I also babysit typically around 5 hours a week, give or take.
I volunteer at my local elementary school’s STEM club (1 hour a week) – I have been volunteering there since the club started 4 years ago.
I volunteer at all of my district’s events, such as writing workshops and STEM events. I have gotten multiple certificates for my work in these events.
Though not finalized, I plan to spend my summer interning at a local STEM camp.
Intended Major: Most likely Mechanical Engineering but I am also currently considering Civil Engineering
Another thing to mention: My school has a very good relationship with Cornell – they typically accept upwards of 20 students every year from the ones that apply (I’m not 100% sure but it may be around 40-50).
Please let me know if ED Cornell could be a possibility for me because I’m not really sure.
Another Note: For other colleges, I’m considering UMich, NYU (legacy), Lehigh, BU, CMU, Northeastern, and UPenn
Please give me your thoughts on whether or not it’s a possibility for me. While I know these things are not exact, my parents and I are not really super knowledgable about the college process, especially with super selective schools.
Thanks!
