Do I have a chance at Michigan or should I ED elsewhere?

Hi, my GPA is only about a 3.5/3.6 (my school does it differently (a 89.5/100) in a very intense pubic school with about half honors/AP classes. I just got a 34 on my ACTs. Michigan is my dream school but if I really have no shot, I may ED elsewhere. Also, would I have an easier time applying to LSA or kinseology sports major. Both interest me but I don’t have an internship in either area - just coursework. Thanks in advance.

Are you in-state or OOS for UMich? Acceptance rates are very different for these 2 groups and much more selective for OOS (class of 2022 had a 19.4% OOS acceptance rate). https://www.mlive.com/news/ann-arbor/index.ssf/2018/06/university_of_michigan_receive_8.html

Further, Michigan does not have ED, only EA and RD. Many ED plans allow EA applications to public schools, so you could apply to Michigan EA in addition to another school ED, but always make sure you understand the specific ED rules. Of course, if you are accepted to your ED school, you would have to withdraw your Mich app.

I am oos. And I know Mich doesn’t have ED, but if Michigan is hopeless for me I may ED elsewhere and will have to go if I get in. My schools naviance doesn’t have anyone with my combination of grades and ACTs to compare to.

I can’t chance you because I don’t have enough information, and short of seeing your essays and LoRs will never have enough info. It sounds like you have good rigor in your high school classes, GPA somewhat low for UMich, but a great ACT score. Naviance only gives you part of the picture, but are there any rejections to the north and/or east of your stats? Regardless, UMich will be a reach for you, as it is for all OOS applicants. The degree of the reach will be dependent on the rest of your app (ECs, Essays, LoRs). I would advise you to not apply ED to any school unless you are certain you would be very happy to attend.

This is one of the easier paths in. You could always transfer to Lsa etc later on. Have a stellar senior year and try your best to get mostly “A” s The 34 should help you but again a lot of people were wait listed last year like 10,000. They only look at unweighted GPA also.

Some will get in with your scores but being oos really tough… All you can do is give it a shot with no expectations.

Your GPA is low for Michigan.

That said, don’t apply ED to a school unless you are sure you’d love it. Just because you can apply ED somewhere, doesn’t mean you have to do so.
