I looked at Grinnell really seriously last year. Great school. Your stats do put you in the game for admission there and other selective LACs. What will matter now is which traits shine through in your essays and recs.

Show how you are involved, make a difference, are a leader or stand out, what drives you or what you are seeking intellectually. But, don’t try to do all that with your essays. Make your story interesting and focused. Come up with original phrases to stick in their minds.

Above all, don’t underestimate the power of being friendly. It’s easy to come across as too unique or strong willed.

Look at the Common Data Set for Grinnell last year and compare your stats to those of the admitted students. (Scroll down - it’s around page 8). Grinnell is a significant reach for you, but that doesn’t mean you should apply.

Have you checked out Saint Mary’s College of Maryland, the public LAC in Maryland? Beautiful campus right on the Chesapeake, less expensive than Grinnell (unless you get significant financial aid), and excellent quality.

Major reach. All B’s your junior year, very weak class rank, and test scores well below average for Grinnell. Doesn’t help that you’re Asian and like 15% or more of the school is already Asian. Sorry, I don’t think it’s likely at all.

If you really want to go to Grinnell, the only thing you can improve this late is your test scores. Go check around the SAT/ACT forums for advice, do lots of practice tests, and take the ACT as well as the SAT to see which one you do better on.

Kudryaka, You must be confusing Grinnell with some other school as far as percentage of Asian students. According to the Common Data Set, available on the college’s website, 5.8% of Grinnell students are “Asian, non-hispanic.” Another 4.3% identify themselves as “2 or more races, non-hispanic” but even if ALL those students are Asian (and they are not) that’s not close to 15%. Grinnell works hard to achieve a diverse student body and there are many students of color. I don’t think rorror’s ethnicity will be a negative. That being said, Grinnell is probably a reach, but for other reasons.

Asian race is not an issue for Grinnell College admission. The race problems for Asians are generally for the top national universities. Actually Grinnell College treats Asians as minority.
