I goto York Prep school in NYC... i know its a bad school. But I have a 97 average, member of scholars, im taking AP Microeconomics this year (not offered by school). Lots of community service. Student Governement. News Paper... the usual activities. I am a sophmore... do i have a chance to get into Yale, Harvard, Penn, MIT?? Im a really smart kid... but I just chose to goto the worst possible school... I got accepted to much better ones, but i was an idiot and chose this for some reason.

I know that it may be a little early, but if you guys say its unlikely, ill just try harder... I just want to know, someone help me out here, im sooo paranoid

If your sats are stellar & if you develop an interesting ec for which you have a genuine passion (it could be a job, tutoring poor kids, anything) you have a chance to gain admission to an ivy league school. You might take some courses over the summer at Columbia University or another well-regarded college program in a serious academic subject to show your academic depth. Good luck.

Yea, ive been looking into the summer courses.... i think im definitely gonna take one. Probably in business. looking at the Wharton LEAD program... I reallly want to do that columbia one, Does anyone know why the Intro to business etc is closed? Does that mean registration is complete and no more admissions or has it not started yet??

As you guys can see, im into business, economics, that field. So what do you guys recommend? Honestly, if i dont get into one of those schools or atleast NYU, im thinking of just not going to college and starting my own business... somebody shed some light on me here

RE: Lead, are you a minority?

Yes, i am Indian

Also add wharton to the list. I have no clue what to do... my brother and my sister both applied to college 6 and 10 years ago... times have changed... so have the SATs, what do you guys just recommend doing?? I know keep up the GPA, good SAT scores, stellar essay... but more so activities and APs, what do you guys recommend??

Lol.. Indian.. that definetely won't help you..

Yea... we're all wayyy to smart... i wish i was black. with what i will have accomplished when im done, if i was black, i would get into anywhere

I wouldn't be quite so quick with that last comment, if I were you (and no, I'm not black).

Seriously, if you want to go to a business school like Wharton (or MIT Sloan, or NYU, or Virginia, or Michigan), then start doing some business ECs. Start a website to help your local community, create your own business in some specialty field (one Indian that was accepted to Wharton this year did exactly that--his business was party supplies), or do some business-related internships on a volunteer basis.

The school you went to as a high schooler isn't everything in admissions. It what you did while at that school--academics, ECs, awards and activities, community involvement, etc. that makes the difference.

Also, keep in mind that admissions are based upon contacts as well. What have you done to get to know the people at the schools you are interested in applying to? There are reasons people take summer or evening courses at Columbia, Penn, and other Ivy league schools that are not just related to the classes themselves. I've known a lot of people who got into schools not based just upon grades and test scores, but rather in addition as a result of their networking talents.

Good luck.

Being Asian is part of the bad deal in admission, Asians thrive by themselves and yet not given minority status... affirmative action?? Not for over-achieved-asians =)

So would you recommend making a BS business and website?? Because i could sell like indian stuff that i know my family and family friends would all buy... i think it could work out, and i know how to make websites, so i think it could be fine

It would be valid if only a few people buy stuff right? But if i get a lot of hits... then thats still fine right?

What did you get on your SATs?

Here's the deal: For admission to the schools you've listed, these are the factors that count most: GPA, class rank, SAT scores (or ACT scores), and SAT2 scores. If you're serious about getting into these schools, you need to have, at minimum, a GPA of 95 (3.8 on a 4 point scale). You also need to be ranked in at least the top 5% of your class, to score better than 2250 on your SATs, and to score well above 700 on all the SAT2s you take. These are, for most kids, the minimum requirements.

As far as ECs go, well, ECs are those activities you like to do. I'll repeat that: ECs are the activities you like to do. If business is your thing, and you'd really enjoy creating a little on-line business selling Indian trinkets, go for it. On the other hand, if you put up a BS business website to manipulate the adcoms at Wharton or where ever, why bother? Besides, they'll probably see through it. These schools are looking for committment, involvement, and, yes excellence, not superficiallity. So, ask yourself, What activities do you like to do? Then get involved with them, and do them to the best of your ability.

Thanks alot for the advice. What SAT IIs do you reccommend i take? Im taking bio this year in school, so i was thinking i could take the SAT II bio, but theres 2 and i dont know which to take. BUT also ive heard its verry hard. So i dont know. I will be taking some summer course this summer, and ill think about what extra thing i should do...

And i havent taken the SATs yet, im only in 10th grade

Oh and when you say 5% do you mean in my school or the country??

In general, you take the SAT2 for a subject the May or June of the year you had the subject in school. I took the one that centered on ecology in 10th grade, because I understood that one was the easier one. But talk to your teacher to get a second opinion.

...And I mean the top 5% in your school.

Yeah being Indian is def. not going to help you in the admissions process at those schools...but be sure to mention that gem about black people getting into those schools easily in your essays. They will love it, for sure.

wow... you people sure are sensitive, and it definitely is a fact, because Asians make wayy more money than black people (avgs. from middle class)... Black people are naturally not as quick as asians. They have other physical talents, they have stronger hip bones for one... its the truth, if everyone was born the same, wouldn't we all be going to the same colleges?

I will make it:

WOW YOU HAVE CROSSED THE LINE OF DECENCY. Everyone is entitled to their opinion about affirmative action but you are out of control.

Your comment implying that african americans are innately intellectually inferior to asians makes you sound ignorant and bigoted.

Your added reference to money just makes you sound like a classless bigot.

Do yourself a favor and clean up your act. Make comments like these at an interview or on your essay and you will get rejected from every top school even if you are a valedictorian with 2400 SATs. TAKE THAT TO THE BANK.

Right on holycow...the OP is a pretentious bastard.

OP, would you like it if i said how "you better start practicing your 'Thank you, come again'" because you're Indian...

Ever heard of Immanuel Kant? Nature vs. Nurture? Don't flaunt your ignorance of other people's plights. I am, to some extent, bitter that certain people (URMs, legacys, recruited athletes, extremely wealthy) can get into Harvard with lackluster academic records, while money and no "hook" constrain my college options. But to say that they are intellectually inferior to me is ridiculous. They just have different priorities, different situations, and don't need to work so hard academically. Because, in the end, they will end up with a degree from Harvard, Princeton, or Yale regardless and I (and you) will not.

I understand you guys completely... I do apologize to any black people reading this. I am not racist at all. And gchris i completely get what your saying now that you put it in my perspective. I think I've been watching to much Mind of Mencia lol... I do sincerely apologize, i know i was completely out of line here.
