I graduated from Frank Sinatra School of the ARts with a 93 average, took 4 AP classes, and, since I was an Instrumental Music major, I took music classes in addition to the academic classes. I was an editor for the school magazine, in the symphonic orchestra (which won two NYSSMAs at NYU this June), on the orchestra committee, and in the debate club. I was part of the National Honor Society and got a award for Academic Excellence and Leadership in Activities that improve the community. I also did over 300 hrs of community service. The only bad thing is my ACT score-- I got a 25. Another bad thing would be my SAT Subject Tests--600 on the Math Level 1 and 540 on the Literature.

Now, I am a freshman at Baruch College, joined two clubs and I am planning to start another one. I think I could try to get my GPA to a 3.7 by the end of the first semester.

I am planning to apply to NYU for fall 2010 semester as a Judaic studies major. DO I have a chance? And what should my GPA be?

ha, ha, east. i’ll answer it here just to appease you. :-P

CAS usually has transfers enter with around a 3.4-3.7. I entered with a 3.4 for Steinhardt but then backed it up with internships and good essays.

If you’re REALLY worried about the ACT score, I would suggest waiting until third semester or junior year to transfer. Your high school record won’t have as much weight. You can look at the MAP (general requirements) list and try to knock them out so you can just do major stuff at NYU.

thanks missamericanpie. I was more worried about my GPA because I thought that you need a 4.0 to get in. But I really want to be a sophmore transfer to NYU so if I would apply for next fall, do you think I would have a chance despite the ACT score?

You can still try, although, the only people I know who came for sophomore year were also coming from highly ranked privates (Swarthmore, Oberlin, etc). It’s worth a shot, since you’re applying to a smaller major.

I feel like there’s another NYU transfer lurking around the boards, lol. I can’t be the only one!

Yeah no one wants to major in Judaic Studies so maybe that would work to my advantage. But is it possible to apply to the Steinhardt school and then immediately transfer to the CAS?

Thank you for all your help missamericanpie. I guess it’s better for me to apply directly to the Judaic Studies program at CAS. I am an active member of the Hillel Club at Baruch but there are no JEwish classes I could take in the college so I could write in my essay that one of the reasons I want to transfer is because Baruch does not offer the major I want.

Once again, thank you and I’ll apply for fall 2010.
