Do I have a chance?

I'm currently a junior and my cumulative GPA is 3.7 and I got 30 on the ACT. I don't really know anything about Northwestern other then that it's a good school. I want to know if I stand a chance before I get too excited about possibly going to Northwestern.

Yes, you do. Your application will receive a full read.

Bstacer, I’m currently a junior like you, but I have extensively researched Northwestern (it’s my number one!). Your GPA and ACT are both a little low for NU. There are many applicants with a 4.0 and 33+ ACT. However, the good thing about Northwestern is that it takes a holistic approach to reviewing your application, so there is no minimum GPA/standardized test requirement. Still, I would retake that ACT and try to get a higher score and work hard to raise that GPA. Of course, you only gave us two aspects of your application. Are you taking AP/Honors classes? The most rigorous schedule offered at your school? Are you super involved in an extracurricular for which you’ve won multiple regional/state/national awards? Can you write amazing essays that truly showcase your unique personality? Keep in mind that NU’s acceptance rate was 18% this year (with 30,000+ applications!)

Best of luck with your college search!

I agree with Just Smile. Your GPA is def low. Your ACT is on the low side too, although not as harmful as your GPA would be in my opinion. However, there are many other aspects for NU to consider so we would need to know more about you to make a solid decision about your chances.
If you have really good EC’s, a good essay and good recs, and you have been taking the hardest possible classes offered and you can get the ACT up to a 31-32, you should have a chance, even with a low GPA.

I got in with a 3.7 UW GPA, although I did apply with a 35 ACT. Perhaps your GPA will be made up by other factors?

I’m going to disagree slightly with some posters here.

If the 3.7 is unweighted, I’m not sure it’s that low for NU acceptance. Especially since different HS’s have different grading standards. More important probably is what the OP’s class rank is. If 3.7 puts is in the top 10% of the class, it’s probably ok. If top 5% of the class, then it’s probably solid.

On the other hand, the 30 on the ACT is probably bottom quartile for NU.

Put the two together, and I come to the same conclusion as the other posters. NU is probably a bit of a reach, though not impossible. – Justsmile asks the right questions here.
