Do I have a chance?

Objective:
- ACT: 33 (35 E, 35 M, 34 R, 29 S)
- SAT II: taking Math II, USH, and Chem in October (I know, I really put it off - expecting 750-800's)
- Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
- Rank: 5/200ish with upward trend
- AP: none yet - only 2 AP courses offered at my school. I was told the lack of opportunities at my school wouldn't hurt me. Thoughts?
- Senior Year Course Load: most rigorous throughout high school - AP Lit, AP Calc (BC isn't offered), Physics, Spanish IV, Micro/Macro Econ, American Government, Athletic PE (required for all athletes)
- Major Awards: All-State Soccer, All-Sectional Soccer, 2-time All-Conference Soccer, 2-time Academic All-Conference Soccer/Basketball, broke my high school's soccer record for most assists in career, CEL Outstanding Achievement Award for Excellence in Mathematics, JV soccer MVP
EDIT: I want to major in Engineering or CS

Subjective:
- Extracurriculars: Student-Body President, Varsity Soccer Captain, 9 years of travel soccer, Varsity Basketball Captain, NHS, Math Tutor, Spanish Club, 5 years of piano, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Coached 3 years at a youth soccer clinic
- Job/Work Experience: Soccer referee for the area youth league, basketball referee for saturday youth league, daily yard work for my dad :(
- Volunteer/Community service: ~100 hours through sanctioned activities for NHS, Special Olympics Basketball Referee, Organized our town's Christmas Parade, ~50 hours with my church
- Summer Activities: Usually consumed with soccer and basketball camps and soccer tournaments - I try to find time to do a bit of computer programming, reading, going to the pool, hanging out with friends, and learning new things through online classes at Stanford/MIT. This summer's activities consist of Northwestern ID camp, EXACT Elite Midwest Soccer Camp, KISS, GSI Summer Showcase, SLSG Metro Showcase, Veterans' Cup, "coached" at my high school's 3-week summer basketball school, and finally Cornell's 2-day prospect mini-camp

Other:
- State:IL
- School Type:Public
- Ethnicity:Caucasian
- Gender:M
- Income Bracket:250-300k
- Hooks: This isn't a hook, but I have varying levels of interest from ~75 schools for soccer.
Some of the schools I'm most interested in include:
- Cornell
- UMass
- Harvard
- North Central College
- Colorado School of Mines
- WUSTL
- MIT
- UChicago
- College of Charleston
- Vassar
- Emory
- NYU
- St. Louis
I really love playing soccer and I want to play in college; I don't care if it's for a varsity team or club team. I haven't received any official offers from any of these schools, but when I get my first I will be able to use this as leverage with other schools that are interested in me. I haven't decided yet if I'm ready to commit to playing college soccer, but if I do being a recruit will most likely help me through admissions.

Final Comments:
I realize that one of my biggest weaknesses is pursuing my academic interests outside of the classroom. Being kept so busy with sports has kept me from doing anything spectacular like a lot of the people on CC. I really am very interested in computers and engineering, but the only thing I've been able to do is teach myself programming languages and I have nothing to show for that. How will colleges look at my involvement with sports when trying to see if I have any academic interests outside of school?

Also, the schools I’m asking you to chance me for are the schools I’m interested in with soccer out of the equation. Sorry if that was unclear

I don’t know too much about the other schools, but I will say that I believe you have a good chance to get into University of Chicago, based on past “Chance Me” threads. Also, it’s in state, so that saves you some money.

I wouldn’t save any money because its a private school, right? Thanks though!

you won’t be saving much money. Uchicago has the same prices for in and out of state students.

UCol
School of mines
UIUC
UChicago

Definitely getting in those. The rest I’m not sure

@sweatypi I appreciate the info!

I’d say that the listed Ivies and MIT are reaches, but I think everything else I think is a match (to be honest, I am slightly less familiar with admissions the others, though). The main reason they are reaches are because, well, they are reaches for everybody, but let me just quickly go over my immediate thoughts after going over your application:

1) The lack of AP courses shouldn’t hurt if your school simply doesn’t offer them. Colleges won’t penalize you as long as you are taking the hardest courses your school offers, which it appears you are doing.

2) Your ACT scores aren’t great compared to other who are applying to the Ivies, but they should be good enough. Frankly, I don’t think colleges care too much about standardized test scores – they just want to make sure you aren’t an idiot, and your 33 clearly demonstrates that you aren’t. Nearly all colleges say they are FAR more concerned with GPA/class rank, and being in the top 2.5% of your class is awesome.

3) In terms of extracurriculars, it is difficult to judge. Being ASB President, especially in a public school, is really great. You also have shown a lot of dedication to soccer, and I frankly believe colleges care more about dedication to an activity rather than how many activities or what activities you’ve done. With that said, I wouldn’t say your extracurriculars will make you stand out from the average Ivy applicant, which is why I still classify those schools as reaches. I figure most students applying to any of those schools will probably be really strong in at least one extracurriculars, if not more.

Still, great job so far, and you stand as good of a chance as just about anybody else! Good luck!

If you have the time, I’d appreciate a chance back here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1367123-what-realistic-chances-me-thanks.html</a>
Thanks!

@adodie thanks and I will chance back!
