Do I have a good appeal case?

Hi guys, sorry that this is yet another appeal thread but I believe I have a decent case for appealing and wanted everyone’s opinions.

I’m a HS senior, instate, and was just rejected from the UW, my first choice school. I think I was rejected because of my grades, as I could only put in grades up to my junior year, but I’ve completely brought them senior year.
Here are my stats:

GPA to Junior Year: 3.16 (I had an array of A’s, B’s and C’s)
GPA now: 3.3 (I got straight A’s in all 7 of my classes first semester senior year)
SAT: 1750 (my math and CR were in the 600s range but my writing was average)
Senior courses: Chamber Orchestra, Japanese 4, Law and Justice(1st sem.)/Life and Finance(2nd sem.), World History 1(1st sem. I didn’t take this class freshman year)/Art 1(2nd sem.), AP Government, AP Calculus BC, AP Literature.

I also joined 5 clubs this year (Interact, Multicultural, DECA, Math, and Earth Corps) and have participated in all of them one way or another and pretty much go to all the meetings, though they aren’t as active as I had hoped. I was involved with Key Club and FBLA during my freshmen year at a different school. I also have a part-time job at a fast food place that I’ve had since Junior year and I held a different job during sophomore year.

I’m hoping my dramatic grade increase to straight A’s senior year + extracurriculars will help overturn my rejection, as I had lower grades previous years due to personal problems (moving, self-esteem, being gay). Opinions? :slight_smile:

I think the positive grade trend works in your favor. However, the GPA and SAT are lower than other applicants who are also going through the appeals process. If you can really work to illustrate your passion for UW in the letter and why you would be a great fit for the school, you might have a chance. Personally, I am unsure if it will overturn a rejection – but I am no expert.

The grade improvement is definitely a plus, good job on that. Many of your counterparts in the appeal process will have a GPA at least at the 25th percentile so while it may be possible it’s probably not likely.

According to their website, 1 in 20 are admitted off of appeals. You have to consider whether or not you are going to be in the top 5% of those other appeals people. But do not let that stop you from trying – there is no harm in seeing what happens!

Thank you guys so much for the feedback! I can’t really do much about my GPA now sadly & I know the chances are really slim (my AP gov teacher even refused to write me a letter of rec bc hardly any of his students who’ve appealed have been able to get accepted) but I would regret it if I didn’t at least try (ツ)/

I also plan on appealing, and I would suggest that you explain why you need UW seattle campus. Definitely take a look at their appeal process on their website as well:https://admit.washington.edu/Admission/Applied/Appeal

I had very similar stats as you with an upward grade trend and appealed. Got accepted 3 weeks later so I say go for it

@UWSeattle1 thank you this gives me a lot of hope!! Can I ask if you were waitlisted or rejected initially?

@kibania rejected initially
