You have to take the ACT/writing for most colleges.

Actually, no, you don’t. Every single college I applied to would take either the ACT+ or the SAT I and two or three SAT subject tests. Even in the Midwest, where the ACT is the test of choice, one does not necessarily need to submit one’s ACT. I applied to ten schools and did not send my ACT+ to a single one, including two Ivies and several Midwestern schools. The only reason I took the ACT was because it was a graduation requirement. I have yet to hear of a single school that required the ACT, as opposed to the SAT or a choice, for admissions. In fact, the Princeton Review makes a point to say that ‘colleges accept either the SAT or ACT.’

Please do explain to me about coastal students who probably wouldn’t know the ACT if it knocked on their door.

It’s a choice. Pick whichever one you get a higher score on to send, or just send your SAT scores + Subject Tests. Or the ACT+, if that’s what one happened to take. Oy.

You misunderstood. My fault. The point I was trying to make was, [if] you’re you going to submit the ACT to satisfy the test requirement, most upper tier colleges require the ACT/writing…as opposed to the ACT without the writing section. ;)

.

Ah. I see. You seem to have misunderstood me as well. Here in the Midwest, we call the ACT/writing the ACT+.

Thanks everyone!! I signed up for the ACT+Writing. I just wanted to like triple check, if I do well on the ACT+ I DO NOT have to send in any SAT Subject Tests? Because that would make my life haha. And last night I did the ACT practice booklet my guidance counselor gave me and it seems SO MUCH EASIER than the SAT…I got every single question right on the English part! (Granted, I wasn’t even loosely trying to replicate testing conditions on my couch, but I still think I completed the 75 questions under the time I would have been allotted in the legit test). It made me feel way more optimistic about this whole thing, and I ordered a prep book. Does anyone have any advice for the ACT+ or preparing for it for when I take it in April?

When you take the ACT, answer EVERY question. Since there’s no penalty for guessing, it’s much better to take a stab at it and possibly get it right than to leave it blank.

The science section freaks people out, but it’s not hard. I recommend reading the questions first and then going back to the graphs because they are full of superfluous info that will bog you down and waste time if you go through all of it.

Thanks averagesnarker!!! I really appreciate it.

Also, could anybody recommend some match schools? Not safeties, because I want to get into the best undergrad as I possibly can (for legitimate reasons, not just material), but maybe a tad bit more plausible than Vassar to apply to EA (I intend on applying ED to Vassar next year). Also, I’d prefer to stay in the Northeast and will hopefully get a 30-31 on the ACT + writing. Thanks!

Look at the LAC Rankings for those that rank #10 - 25… those will be schools that are similar to Vassar.

Skidmore would probably be a match, and it’s lovely :). I would definitely be considering it if I hadn’t gotten into Vassar. Also, a low match, maybe Bard?

Baaaaaaaaaard.
