Do I have any chance?!

I hate these kind of threads but I just have to know because after reading others, I’m feeling like i really have no chance; AT ALL…

I really love Boston College & I mentioned that in my application but my chances are even slimmer because this year is supposed to be the record breaking year for number of applicants, which is extremely scary!

I participate in a myriad of extracurricular activities such as National Honor Society, Science League, College Bowl, Mock Trial Program, Yearbook Committee, Rachel’s Challenge, Newspaper Club as well as Volleyball for two years, Soccer for two years, and Track for 3 years.

I am a La Verdad substance abuse prevention peer leader, a part of my city’s Youth City Council, Northeast Tobacco Youth Advisory Board, part of the 84 Statewide Tobacco Crew, Anti-Violence Club at North Shore Community College, Reach out and Read volunteer at the local Community Health Center, NHS tutor at my school, Girls Incorporated Tutor, Fourth Grade Sunday School Teacher for two years, Walk for Hunger 2008 organizer, Liver Foundation Walk, and an Obama campaign volunteer this year, as well as many other volunteer opportunities during my high school career.

I recently wrote a grant for Girls incorporated and we were awarded it accordingly $10, 000 to fund a role model’s tobacco group which I am leading. I was also given an award for being the National Finalist for Excellence in Youth Advocacy Award and given a citation by the mayor of my city…I am planning on sending as a supplement material to my application a copy of this award and citation.

p.s. I promised myself I wouldn’t ask questions like these…but I had to know what anybody else thought…

also, my CRITICAL READING was 510, MATH was 590, and my WRITING was 550; this was after taking the SAT three times

Thanks for reading this and any answer would numb down my worries!

Hi.

Your volunteer activities are amazing but you did not mention your GPA nor if you have any AP classes under your belt. From your SAT scores, it doesn't look too promising but I would suggest you take the ACT test ASAP and see if you fair better on that test. I found the test to be more in line with what we learned in school.

Good luck to you.

I'm taking 3 AP Classess this year & I took 2 last year; scored a 4 on both (AP English language & AP HISTORY). Hoping for a five on AP Biology; my gpa is 4.5 UW ( out of 5.0) and 3.7 out of 4.0. & I am an African American female from New England! & BC is not accepting any exams after january other then that I would have taken the ACT, I was in the hospital the day of the exam and I couldn't take it : (

hmm, call and ask for an extension.. talk to them in the admissions office, tell them your situation and commitment to wanting in.. mabe you'll get lucky and they'll extend the january test deadline for you.. or at least put you on the wait list in the event that you get a better score.

everything looks great minus SAT scores

I'll definetly do that, I know the dean of minority recruitment very well, I'll contact him; Thank you for the suggestion! God Bless!

Your scores are really the only problem becuase they are vastly below the 25 percentile but then again your a urm which BC needs so who knows.

Yes..that's true. But they still have a large percentage of minority undergraduates. Thanks anyway!

I think you're in. I hope you get in.

Thanks! ; I hope I get in too or at least waitlisted; that way It would show I am a promising maybe. Thanks again!

Honestly, i think your a likely acceptee... your ECs are spectacular and so is your GPA... your SATs are a bit low but that shouldnt be much of a problem... your love for the college and your essays should push you over the edge. good luck.

Lobzz- thanks! That is definetly true.

SAT scores are definately the low point of your application. However, because of your great ECs, APs, and other credentials, I think you have a pretty good chance. Good luck!

JaradW- Thanks! You too!

I'd say you have a little better than a 50/50 chance. Your SAT scores are going to be the killer, but colleges understand that some students just can't take tests. Just realize that there is going to be a ridiculous amount of students just as interested in the school, with killer ECs, and better SAT scores. I don't mean to be a killjoy, but just be realistic. That said, you may have written an amazing essay and have great recs. Good luck!

Schwartz- I have definetly realized that; SAT's will definetly be my downdall in terms of being admitted but thanks for the honesty! & Thanks for reading : )

Your activities and everything look great, but your SATs are pretty low for BC. I would say being a minority will help you, as it does at most schools, but my black friend got into ND and Gtown with way low grades for those schools (but really solid ACT), but didn't get into BC EA, so I don't think they consider it as important. It doesn't hurt to apply, you have a shot. Good luck!

JR526- Thanks! Hopefully my character at the end of the day will help (lol) & congrats to ur friend! Good luck to you too! : )

hahaha no offense to the OP, but i feel like everyone who asks people to chance them really knows that they will probably get in, yet feel like they need to be reassured. You guys need to relax. What these people are telling you doesn't matter anyway. If you think you'll get it, chances are you will. Have some self-confidence and get off the computer! Haha go do something fun and take your mind off of school! Its the weekend. Don't think about anything school related.

cohen139- I posted because I really think I have no chance, especially since other teens were posting there scores which is definetly my MAJOR problem in terms of admittance and my scores aren't even close to the 25 % of admitted students; but that is so true! (lol) It's just so darn stressful! But thanks : )

yeah but the thing is, is that i felt the same way and i got in early. so just relax. you never know whats going to happen.
