Do I have any chances to getting in? Gap year re-apply!

Hi everyone!

I'm an international student and got rejected by all schools last year bc I only learn English for a year, my sat score was too low ;( though I speak perfect German (not my native language) And Yale has asked me if I have any higher scores, but unfortunately I don't by last fall.

Well, I re-take all tests and during the summer, I had couple awesome intern experiences. So this year I decided to re-apply and EA Yale in this fall. But lots of people told me that if I got rej last year then I shouldn't EA Yale this year.. I'm kinda lost.. Anybody can give me any advices?

Eassy: very strong and my cousin is helping me on language. (he went to duke)
Awards and Honors; I have tons of honors regarding drama, debate, speech, German, student gov. , photography, and composition in national or international wide. Besides, I have my own talkshow on tv since age 15, and I'm a national athlete with certificate(swimming). I also submitted my dramatic supplement with triple languages.

Activities and volunteer: a lot. Was the president of student union, hosted lots of national even international events related with teens, worked for national tv station, national famous acting company and German embassy(intern), volunteered in mental hospital and a temple in Japan . And I'm a total world traveller.

Additionally, I'm also in the top 50 of global wide miss Asia cosmos pageant, though I'm not sure if it's gonna help.. :S

Well, to be short, I have 6 pages activities, awards and honors. And I think I'm in lack of academic experience.. Though I'm working with a professor for his new book.. I hope it's gonna help..

Any one can give me some advices about re-apply or gap year? Do I have any chances for getting in? Thanks a lot!!!!!!!

Most colleges have gone to electronic files these days, which allows Admissions Offices to keep a pdf copy of past files. When you reapply to schools which rejected you, Admissions Directors can refer to your previous file. In your case, that may be good news, as I’m assuming your 2300 SAT is a huge improvement over your previous score.

That said, you might have better luck applying to a new group of schools because as JHS noted in another thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/yale-university/1384149-reapplying-ed-after-rejection-last-year.html

"There are exceptions to everything, I guess, but I don’t think I have ever heard of a student being successful reapplying to Harvard or Yale a year after being rejected or waitlisted there. The OP should probably accept that Yale is off the table and concentrate on other colleges (and other means of financing college).

Years ago, there was a famous thread on CC about “andisson”, a top student who somehow managed to get rejected everywhere he applied, including what he thought was his safety school. He had a very productive gap year, and also did a great job analyzing what might have gone wrong with his original applications. He applied to a broader range of colleges the second time around, and received a number of admissions offers; he ultimately went to one of those colleges that goes by a single initial here on CC and has an admission rate to match.

But . . . not one single college of the colleges that had rejected him the year before accepted him when he reapplied. With his new-and-improved application and great gap year, he was accepted by almost all of the colleges to which he applied for the first time, and rejected by every college to which he reapplied.

So, reapply if you want, but don’t give up any real opportunity to give your reapplication a better chance, because your reapplication probably has no chance no matter what you do."

@gibby thank you so much! I read over the other thread! However, I think my situation is kinda unique. Last year Yale was pretty interested in me, but my scores were obviously out of line, and I think that’s why they rej me. This year I make remarkable improvement plus notable gap year experience, is that mean I have a better chance than normal re-apply applicants? ;(

And I almost applied to all top schools last year… According to people’s words here, I won’t be likely to get into all top schools? ;(

Only an Admissions Director can say why you were rejected last year. It could have been your test scores, but it could also have been your essays or teacher recommendations or something else.

JHS – who has many years of experience and more than 9,200 posts – was very clear though. S/he has never read about a student being accepted after being rejected. Never. Ever. Not one. At either Harvard or Yale.

That said, you could be the first. Best of luck to you.

@gibby I see I see :wink: thanxxxxxxx!!!
