SAT's from freshman year- math-700 verbal- 520 writing 500

i am retaking the SAT's in october

EC's- Vice president of science club, member of latin club and Model U.N. Trying out for tennis.

NO NO Absolutely NOT lol jk

You’ve got a good gpa and interesting courses… definitly need to work on sats tho… those scores are not really competetive u need to bump it up atleast by 400 points… thought you are only a sophomore, you should consider really excelling in a few extracurriculars rather than just being a part of clubs. (ie Rank in a Science Olympiad, or place in a model un competition)

But look at any of the other myriad of chances threads to get an idea of how much more you may or may not need to do

Your rank is good, and your classes are good, as well, although I’d suggest more APs going into your junior year. Your SAT, however, needs work. Try to get, at the very least, a 650 on each verbal and writing, and above a 720 if you want to be truly competitive. Your ECs are okay, just make sure you follow through on them through all four years - colleges love commitment. See if you can’t supplement your interests in science/Latin/politics with something extra.

I also volunteer at the local library.

To be honest, you do not seem from the numbers like a competitive applicant. You would need to raise your SAT scores by at least 400. Your EC’s are a bit dry/common. Also, one AP class is definitely a set-back.

You would need to come up with something truly compelling in your essays to make yourself stand out as a candidate. At this point, I would recommend either taking drastic action to differentiate yourself in the months before application, or consider other universities.

Do you fit into any of the following categories?

  1. Legacy
  2. Athlete
  3. URM
If not, you will almost certainly not be admitted.

The kid’s a sophomore, give him a break.

Woops my bad. Yeah you’ve got plenty of time to raise the scores, so just forget what I said.

Is it too late for a junior to start fixing himself up?

Anybody? Anybody?

Your question is so vague that nothing we say will have any real value. Be more specific.

You have the GPA, but not the EC’s. Develop some innovative EC’s, maintain your GPA and study for the friggin SAT and ace it!

Just got my results for the october SAT i took
Math-780
Writing- 660
Reading 570

Ooh…way too low for reading. The reality is that for places like Princeton you need a minimum score of ~650 every section to stand a good chance. I go to Princeton and I got a similar score on the reading section (mid 500s), but that was in 5th grade. This is not meant to disparage your work in any way, since I am sure that you are a capable reader, but you need to pull your score up another 100 points. Practice lots of critical reading sections and you will get better…

It seems you are on track, looks like you’ve improved your writing like 150 points, that’s good.. but like others said, you need another 250 points especially on reading..

“I go to Princeton and I got a similar score on the reading section (mid 500s), but that was in 5th grade.”

lol ouch

Haha, that is harsh. I would say that, in your application state, you don’t stand a fantastic shot. That shouldn’t deter you from applying. If you really want to go, apply and don’t have regrets.

Look. other things matter a whole hell of a lot more than you think. They care about who you are, aka how you present yourself in essays, etc.
