I am confused. I am applying via the common app, do I have to create an account also, or not?

It’s to your advantage to do so. MyROC allows you to access all sorts of things like registration for UR events and college fairs, see your application status, schedule interviews, etc. IIRC, financial aid awards are posted to MyROC.

@WayOutWestMom, do I automatically get one after hitting submit on the common app, or should I make one prior?

You need to go to the UR’s admission website to create a MyROC account. I don’t think you can create one from the Common App.

jamesjunkers: you will see that most, if not all, schools you apply to will ask you to create an account specific to their school to communicate the progress of your application directly with you. Common app is more of a “fire and forget” interface. Once the school has your app, they will communicate with you directly through the accounts you set up with them.

So, you should definitely do it. As I recall, MyRoc is the way we learned that a decision was made on my son’s application (although the decision itself came by snail mail), it’s also the place where we learned about his scholarship offer and where we were able to sign up for the Experience tour.

Also - and I don’t know if this is true or just a rumor I read on CC - schools monitor the frequency that you logon to your account as a way to gauge your interest.
