Do I have too many reaches?? Help!

Ok so I am applying to A LOT of schools. I'm the type of person that thinks I need as many options as possible. I feel as if applying even if you think you have no chance is better than not applying at all. BUT I just saw a few posts with people applying to only 5-10 schools. so here is the categories:

Safeties:4
Match:4
Reach:8

How bad is this? I'm not worried about application fees because they are all waived, and I don't mind writing the extra essays either because I enjoy writing and they are mostly all the same topic.

Should I lower the Reaches and get more Matches? I don't know it I'm doing the right thing. I don't want it to end up being exactly what I'm afraid of, ( and the whole reason im applying to all these schools) getting rejected to most.

I can’t really answer your question when you’re so vague. Be more specific please. What exactly are you asking? What are these “reach” schools specifically (Ivies?), what are your stats?

my question is vague, because all im asking is do i have too many reach schools. reach schools as in the ones i have very low chances of getting in. thats all. is 8 a high amount to have for a person?

@emmcar her question isn’t vague. It’s actually her thread title. Anyways…as long as you’re fine with spending the money/writing essays to apply, and you believe you are a good fit for and can accomplish what you want at the schools you applied to, then you should be fine.

edit: i assume your reaches aren’t impossibles but just reaches.

If the application fees are waived and you genuinely would enjoy going to all the schools you’re applying to then no, you don’t have too many.

I think twelve schools is near the limit of what you should apply to, but not too many. So no, I think your list is fine. You do have a lot of reaches, but I think you have a sufficient number of matches and safeties.

I only applied to 5 schools because I really wanted to go to one specific one and I was certain I would get in and pretty sure I would get substantial merit aid, but I wasn’t 100% certain and it wouldn’t have been affordable without that merit aid, so I applied elsewhere just to be safe.

Well, if your fee is waived, why not? If you have the free time for it, go ahead.

Juillet, the OP is applying to 16 which, to my mind is a little excessive, but if the OP can handle the essays, etc go ahead. Both my DDs applied to five. My only question is why 4 safeties? 2 I can understand if you want a choice. But if a school is a definite admit, your family can afford it, and you would be happy to attend, why 4? Pick the one or two you like best.
