How many reaches are too many? Are 6 reach schools a waste of time? BTW The six reaches are out of 11 schools I'm applying to.

Seems high but many on this site will disagree with me.....are all six schools clearly places you desire to attend?

I think that if you have safeties/matches that you KNOW you will be happy at if you don't get accepted to any of the reaches, and if you are willing to pay the money, then you're fine. Personally, I think you only run into a problem with too many reaches if you don't have any other colleges that you would be happy at.

How many applications can you truly do a good job completing? Sometimes I wonder if 5-6 well done apps might be superior to 11-12 thrown together.

Are you in the ballpark with your stats on the reaches? Do you have an absolute safety that you'd be happy to attend? If yes then 6 OK, if not then rethink your strategy.

while I think 11 is too many, as long as all 11 aren't reaches, you're fine

I have six reaches where I have close to average stats, but the competition is so hard that they would be considered a reach. I do have matches that I'd be more than happy attending. I'm still looking for one more safety where I'd be happy attending.

Is six a good number considering my last comment?

In a way, adjlad, having 6 reaches is almost like having a safety. There's a good chance, the more you apply, that you'll at least get into one. However, you have to ask yourself i fyou actually want to go to them.

Yeah, i definately wouldn't mind going to any of my reaches. I actually had more than six but I forced myself to cut it down to make room for matches and safeties.

everyone does it differently, but six may be a little too high.. i applied to four schools total - one reach, and the other three i knew i'd get into.. (i had good stats) I got into everything but my reach (and received good scholarship money) so if you really feel passionate about all these schools, it's your choice, but you may want to rethink it

It depends how far of a reach. For a 1470 Avg EC top 10% HYPS is probably not likely, but applying to all the other ivies, duke etc would not be a bad strategy

apply to as many as you want to as long as you have match/safety schools that you can fall back on, if all the essays, applications, and fees don't bother you.

All you need is one safety that you know you'll get into. If you're applying to 11 schools, it isn't out of the question to have even 8 or 9 reaches as long as you know you're definitely into your safety school.

Apply to as many as you want to pay the app. fee. for
