I was wondering if i needed to bring the following items. I will be in rieber hall.

-Laundry detergent
-hand soap (the plazas at orientation didn't so I'm wondering if halls provide hand soap)
-ethernet chord (plaza at orientation has wireless but idk if rieber hall does)

You don’t need to bring toilet paper. I was in DeNeve. the maids keep the bathroom pretty well stocked. I brought a bath mat because the floor gets really wet. My room mats didn’t bring one so I just brought one. It was gross to wash though, but I’d rather have a dry floor. I wouldn’t bring a rug though.

Wow! i didn’t know they had those. It would be a pretty smart idea to have one of those especially if you are going home so you don’t have to lug one of those around lol. They are pretty cheap too!

Yeah i brought snacks from costco and I also went to trader joe’s in westwood. It takes a good 15-20 minutes to get there from campus though so I didn’t go to often. When I did I just went straight after class. Granola bars and nuts are good options. They have drinking fountains everywhere for you to fill up a reusable water bottle. I just bought the 24 packs of water and kept them in my closet

And DON’T STRESS OUT if you don’t get everything you need before move in. If you get there and realize you forgot something, you have plenty of time to get stuff and get settled. You’ll move in on the weekend and class won’t start till thursday. Also the day before class starts, Target opens up for UCLA students after hours. There will be buses to take you to Target and you can get an last minute essentials.

I brought my water bottles from home so I didn’t have to carry it all the way from westwood. On saturday (i believe) there is a shuttle that takes people to ralphs, so your son/daughter can just take that to go to ralphs and get some water so he/she doesn’t have to walk all the way there and carry everything back.

I can’t really visualize how big that suitcase would be. My roommate kept his suitcase in the closet so maybe you can. I’m not sure.

And yes like i said before there was plenty of room beneath my clothes, so I bought a rolling rubermaid drawer and it fight just fine

for the past 2 years they’ve also had a “club target” night where target provides transportation during 0 week for students to buy supplies. handy if you forgot something.

You’ll need detergent (but you should probably buy it here so that you don’t have to carry it around everywhere during move-in).

No need for hand soap if you’re in Rieber Hall (the common bathrooms have that)

Ethernet cord is pretty nice to have…wifi in the dorms tends to suck

If you’re in a plaza, then rugs and mats could be nice…I never had them but I’d imagine they’re helpful

Laundry hamper/bag is pretty important to have

Its good to have food in your room…especially late at night when everything else is closed and you’re hungry or don’t want to walk to a cafe. You can get food at the student store, Ralphs, Trader Joes, etc (or from home too).

You can get drinking water from the water fountain in the hallway (if you’re in a residence hall) or from the tap (if you’re in a plaza).

Everyone will forget a few things during move-in, but it really doesn’t matter since you can find almost anything at the student store or at stores in Westwood. And there’s also that Target night which is somewhat worth going to.

There’s actually only 2 outlets, even in triple rooms. But you can rent an Ethernet hub at the Student Technology Center here, and its free of charge as long as you return it back in proper condition at the end of the year.

UCLAPARENT: What dorm is your kid in? My son was in a triple De Neve Plaza last year. We brought those plastic shelves and put them in the closet on the shelf on the top. His half of the closet also had a small dresser in it. We used a hanging sweater organizer where he put a lot of his t-shirts and a hanging shoe rack where he stored his shoes. I think he kept a small suitcase but mostly used his duffle bag when he came home. I thought about using the over-the-door storage things, but his closet had sliding doors, so that would not have worked.

If we bring a reusable water bottle, are we expected to wash them in the bathrooms since there isn’t a kitchen?
Sounds like a much better idea than buying cases of water and keeping them in my room.
