Do I need to list study hall on college apps?

This year, I elected to take a study hall. I dropped an astronomy class that I had which was a huge waste of my time. When I fill out applications, such as the Common App, do I need to list it as a course? I don't get a grade, and I'm not even certain it goes on a transcript.

Also, I already sent an application before I made the change, so now that applications still says I have astronomy. What should I do here?

Umm, thanks?

If a class isn’t placed on your transcript I feel as though you shouldn’t have to report it. However, if the applications you’ve sent out list a class you do not take you should probably email the school about it.

@bears2267. I still need to check with my school to see if it shows up or not. It’s doubtful since I don’t get a grade for it.

Also, I emailed the school and explained the situation. So hopefully that will go over well.

Study Halls usually will reveal themselves whether or not they show up on your transcript (they usually do) by the fact that you are taking fewer classes than your peers. I would list that you have a study hall to avoid any problems that might arise if you don’t (not saying there would be a problem, we don’t know). It is always better to cover your bases than not and have an issue arise.

IMO study hall isn’t a class so you don’t list it as a class.

Yeah, don’t list it.

You can always check with your guidance counselor, but I wouldn’t list it. Study hall is a time filler not a class.

You personally don’t need to list it. I didn’t list any of the study halls I had (which were quite a few by second semester and I had no problem gaining acceptance to any colleges.) However, I think the real problems will be 1) the school to which you already sent your application- talk to your counselor about this one
2) How the class appears on your transcript after you’ve dropped it. At my high school, if you dropped the class within the first week, it would appear as if you never took it. However, for anyone taking a class longer than a week, it would say you dropped the course. Many students had to explain why they dropped it. Otherwise, it appears like senioritis is already eating you away. I’d suggest talking to your counselor about both.

In the end, the study hall will switch to something slightly different that will look better anyway. Thanks everyone!

@iddy09 I’m not worried about the dropped class on my transcript. I dropped it within a week, so I withdraw without any penalties. I also contacted the school to which I already applied. I haven’t gotten a response yet, but it’s still the weekend. Hopefully they’ll understand, since I submitted the application before my senior year even began.
