Do I need to read chinese to do well on the SAT Chinese with listening test?

Hi so I’m a high school sophomore and I’m planning to take the SAT Chinese with listening subject test in November. I can speak Chinese fluently, but I can’t read any Chinese, can I still do well on the test despite my inability to read Chinese? Are there passages where there will be no listening track?

Yes, at least Pinyin. Listening is only 1/3 of the test.

IIRC the test has Simplified and Traditional Chinese as well as Pinyin. You do need to read on the test and if you aren’t proficient in at least Pinyin, the test is going to be tough going.

Most of the reading portions are replies to newspaper ads, basic daily conversations, and similar everyday usage. There is very little related to culture.

Seems like students like you are why some colleges offer Chinese for heritage speakers courses.
